A must-see site for anyone interested in pre-Norman history. Built from Roman stone from the wall and beautifully location. Amazingly well restored Saxon church.

We stopped here while traveling west along Military Road toward Carlisle. There is no actual parking here, just a small pull-out on the road where three or four cars may find a place to pull in. From there, it is a short walk through the...More

We found this as a starting point for our walk. Its well marked and there is a lay-by with parking for about 5-6 cars. Its hard to see how the lie of the land helped Oswald win the battle that happened here. The footpath runs...More

I regret that we did not walk up here. We were close by but nearing the end of our long walk that day (about 14 miles). I don't have many regrets, but I regret being a little too tired to add this on to my...More

Went past this whilst walking Hadrian's Wall. Good information board about the battle and the associated history. St Oswald's church was only a short distance away. Inside the church there were interesting history panels about the church and surrounding area. Nice, peaceful, little church.

We were staying at Heavensfield cottage right next door so decided to walk across the field to visit the church. Beautiful situation steeped in history. Lovely views of surrounding countryside. Good information panels inside.

If you like the idea of Oswald, after a long trudge from south west Scotland, assembling his army at this point with his supporting troops from Bernicia, out of sight and sound of Cadwallon's forces, then this is the place to visit!

THis is the historic site of the battle between Oswald - a young Christian king and the pagan invaders originally from the Norsemen. Oswald defeated the dastardly warlords and established a Christian rulership over Northumbria

We found this while on a walk in the area. The church is lovely. If its a nice day though do have a wander around the fields, you can see where the romans changed their minds about the width of the wall!

Found this church along our hike around the area, up from wall through fallowfield and across the military road. Gorgeous little, beautifully maintained church set on Heavenfields where the battle was is 636 and St Oswins cross. Small exhibition in the church's back room tells...More
