    Amazing landmarks
The Transfagarasan Road offers breathtaking views and an incredibly fun driving experience. I was surprised by the number of bears you can encounter along the route. Driving north from Pitesti, the journey can take around 4 hours with just a few stops for photos. However, I highly recommend dedicating an entire day to this trip — it’s absolutely worth it! The dramatic scenery and the chance to experience one of the most beautiful roads in the world make it a must-see adventure.

    Sorry Top Gear!
Nice road but I think Passo Stelvio is the best, sorry Top Gear! There were bears and motorists fed the bears. Unfortunately, the motorists did not consider the motorcyclists who do not have a car to protect them should the bear decide to attack.

    Amazing panorama and tour
Spectacular route along this road in both directions. In the middle section (Lake Balea) there is an area with numerous food stalls and restaurants, as well as souvenir stalls. There is paid parking. Watch the road because you will see bears and if you do not have a lot of traffic you can see them a little closer in some area raided next to the causeway. There are numerous viewpoints on both sides of the road. Drive carefully.

One of Europe's most spectacular mountain road.
We rode on a minibus that we hired with a local driver. We left Brasov at around 9 am to get ahead of the traffic jam but as we got closer to the peak at Barlea lake the traffic slowed down. The way is amazing, one of the most beautiful mountain ways of Europe. Built as a strategic road under Ceausescu's regime to be able to move troops across the Carpat mountains in case of russian attack. Ceasescu didn't leave behind too many success stories. This way is an exception. We wanted to reach Vidraru lake but due to heavy traffic we stopped at Balea. Had lunch at one of the fast food shops which offer acceptable local menu. The glacial Balea lake is a nice view. A brown bear appeared next to the way at its lower level. Apparently tourists feed them and lure them close to the road. It's a must if you're in the Brasov area.

    Phenomenal
Absolutely phenomenal drive. Great road with stunning scenery along the way. It really is a highlight when visiting this fabulous country. Take your time to stop at noted View points. The road is paved throughout and not at all difficult. Always check weather before going. Of note it is only fully open a few months of the year. Sometimes it is closed due to weather conditions and road works in parts. We self drived on 2nd October and weather clear, but next few days are going to be wet.

    World class mountain road
The renowned motorcycle highway in Europe winds up wooded mountains to the tree line where epic granite peaks rise up steeply. We drove our motorcycle up during the week and were lucky to have the first snow and a day of sunshine! Save time to have lunch at the local restaurants or BBQ cantinas that serve up authentic Romanian treats. Be forewarned- in summer this can be a bumper to bumper traffic jam for miles, so go very early. Pay parking lots only, no roadside parking.

What a great trip we had with Claudiu!
We booked a trip at the end of April. The mountain top was still covered with snow, so if you plan a travel it is better to go from the mid-May or bring proper waterproof boots and warm jacket. Our guide Claudiu/Radu was the sweetest guy ever, he told a lot of stories about the country and his life. In addition to incredible view from the mountain and beautiful old monastery he also bought us to interesting historic fortress, that wasn't in the program. Very professional and interesting guide. From Ukraine with love :))

    Best road in the world
Best road in the world without a doubt. But for your best experience, avoid it during weekend and public holidays. Start the journey early morning, to avoid huge crowds. And the best part its from sibiu to balea lac, from balea lac to curtea de arges isnt that great.

Family roadtrip by car, starting from the Southern side of Fagaras Mountain.
We've stopped a few times on the way.
First time we've noticed a pile of snow and the kids asked me to stop the car urgently as they can't believe their eyes to see snow in July. After touching it, they eventually admitted that it was really snow.
Second time I stopped the car next to a waterfall to drink some water and let the dog get splashed.
Then we have stopped at Balea Lake restaurant to eat papanas and drink some coffees and lemonades while admiring the stunning scenery. Some people we met in the restaurant told us that they encountered a bear, quietly crossing the road.
Vidraru lake dam is impressive yet the area around the dam needs some investement and improvement.
All in all, it was a nice way to hide from summer's heat.

Well know thanks to an appearance on BBC Top Gear with the highest point at 2042 m Balea Lac (lake), Built mainly by military forces The construction ordered by lead to the tunnel dividing northwestern and southern Romania For 40 RON each way you can ride on the cable car over the road and the water fall. The length 3.700 m / aprox. 13 min , capacity 15 persons. This give you different perspective over the road. From the top at Balea Lac spectacular view, if the weather is good.

Leave early in the morning to enjoy the landscapes and fantastic panorama of this dizzying route. With a little luck, you will see a bear at the side of the road (this happened to us) in which case, you must respect the safety instructions (drive slowly without stopping, do not get out of the car...) . You can make a few stops along the way, at the edge of superb waterfalls, at the Vidraru dam or at Balea Lake (be careful, it gets crowded). A very beautiful route.

We drove this route on 13th October. If travelling from Curtea De Arges north, the landscape is in two contrasting halves. The first half until you arrive at the long tunnel is forested with deep valleys. Our drive in mid-October saw beautiful autumn colours here and with plenty of areas to stop, there are good photo opportunities all along the route. Of the two halves, we think the first half is the most picturesque although as a drive the second half is perhaps a little more dramatic. The weather was cloudy but dry but amazingly after emerging on the other side of the tunnel we had climbed higher and it was a completely different day, noticeably colder, raining hard and by the time we reached Balea Lake there was plenty of snow on the mountain side. Unfortunately, the weather was not conducive to exploring the lake area. The landscape on this side is much more rugged. The descent is spectacular with multiple hairpin bends. Good idea to take a photo of the road descent from the top point. There are a couple of roadside parking areas which allow this.
Road conditions generally were fine, much of the route has been fairly recently resurfaced, so overall, the driving experience was smooth, there were just a few areas when the surface was quite rough and needed care around some potholes. Mid-October a good time to visit as the roads were very quiet.

A beautiful route that we drove from south to north with a stopover/overnight stay just before the tunnel. The road becomes more and more spectacular the further you go. Take into account large crowds and few parking options at the dam. Also very busy at Lake Balea, at 10 a.m. there was hardly any parking space

The Emperor's Madness alone is worth the trip to Bascov. Wanted by Ceausescu and costing the lives of numerous people, it reaches 2047 meters at Lake Balea. Truly incredible road, especially in the first stretch from south to north, where the bears calmly wait for the tourists to pass by and feed them. Fabulous landscapes not to be missed

This is a great road to make, but we expected it to be more organised regarding who enters it not to overcrowd it. Instead, we had to wait for hours to reach the top but we couldn’t stop because of no parking space. You might want to mind the bears 🐻 on the road, too. Maybe I just expected more since it was my favourite road as a child, I hoped some maintaining would be done to it. Lost some spark ⚡️ in the meanwhile ⛰.

To take the road is a lot a fun and my humble opinion is that it’s taking time and you have to enjoy your trip. The small waterfalls in the way up , the view, the mountains... everything creates a beautiful experience... is not only the road is everything 😊

This road is one of the most beautiful roads in Romania. The views are amazing, the forest is simply "calling you" louder and louder as you advance on the road. The only reason i give 3 stars is because of the road quality. The romanian goverment ofc is not investing in it so after every winter the road is going from bad to worse. There are parts where the asphalt is new but about 60% percent of the road is full of holes.

The Transfagarasan Highway is one of the most amazing roads you can experience. The road starts in Arges county and finishes in Sibiu county, approximately 152km. At the top, you will find Balea Lake with lots of street food and souvenirs. The best tourist spots are Vidraru Dam, Capra Waterfall and Balea Waterfall.
You can not miss this breathtaking experience if you visit Romania!
