It’s an engineering masterpiece dating back from the communist dictatorship period, just like the Transfagarasan road. The massive concrete dam is over 150 meters tall.
It is worth driving slower if you pass through the area to admire the landscape. If you decide to stop, however, the atmosphere may disappoint you. A few wooden stalls selling horrible souvenirs and two or three stray dogs fighting over leftover food thrown by visitors. Rubbish left on the ground here and there is a sign that many tourists don’t actually care about environment. Pretty depressing.
If you have binoculars or a camera with a decent zoom, you can admire various waterfowl (cormorants, for example), which dry their feathers on the rocky promontory in front of the dam.
Visited the place at the beginning of December and it was not as busy as it may gets during the summer months.

it is one of the great achievements of the last century. Highest dam in Romania and most spectacular as views. Maybe the most touristic, too.
I never been there to find the place deserted. Weekends look like a walking street in the middle of the city. Weekdays is more normal.
People who notice the garbage in the water, they should think of the dynamics of fluids and plastics. Whatever is thrown in the nature uphill from the dam, will get back there sooner or later.
Not sure the administrative authority is cleaning up that mess.
I have never seen the lake full. Or close to full. Went around with the boat.
Just imagine how deep the water is and how the place looked before constructing the dam. Huh.

One of the highest dams in Europe, a landmark of Arges County. Constructed on Arges river and formed lake Vidraru. Construction stretched between 1961-1966, when finished it ranked 5th in Europe.
Beautiful scenery, in every season.

Vidraru Lake is an accumulation lake created in 1965 by the Vidraru Dam in Argeş County, on the Argeş River, for the production of electricity, irrigation and flood prevention. Years in which he built, built.

If I came from Curtea de Arges it might have been more impressive. Coming from Sibiu, I saw first the Transfagarasan Highway, which is such a jaw dropping experience, that I was less impressed by the dam. Anyway, being around, is a pity to not see it.The lake behind and its hight are worth seeing. Don't forget that in the 80's was one of the highest dams in Europe.

A great construction. Each of us should visit this place at least one time in your life. Somebody should open a restaurant there. :)

As you're driving from the transfagarasan road in the direction of curtea de arges, you drive alongside a huge lake. It's surrounded by trees and not many sightseeing points. So then BAM you arrive at this huge dam! With parking spots, some food and beverages as well. Worth the view!

This is a good point to stop and take some pictures of the great view.

There are a few stalls selling local items, drinks and snacks but no other facilities.

There is limited parking so most people just stop on the side of the road which can make it a little crowded.
