- Katerina đź’ŽPatras, Greece541 contributionsWorth the visitIn order to walk around the archaeological site of Epidaurus, you need to have a good rest first to be able to go around it all and observe it properly. There is a path that guides you but personally I would like a little more information as you mostly see ruins which in themselves do not help you understand enough what you are seeing. In order to better understand what you are seeing, it is good to have first visited the museum of Epidaurus where finds from the area are exhibited.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten May 14, 2024

After all, the archaeological site is also of particular interest, as is the museum in which many, many statues and columns are exhibited with a detailed explanation of where they were and what they mean for the history of the worship of Asclepius. that one deserves to live, even more so if given the opportunity to attend a theater performance. - Rik TFredericton, Canada1,478 contributionsWorth the Drive and Well-worth the Entry FeeThere is so much to see here. It's an amazing site with: a gym for working out, a treasury, a hospital, an amphitheatre, a stadium, an altar for sacrifices, and a lot more. There is also a museum with some gorgeous statues and sculptures inside. It's a pretty easy walk on a nice path and when we were there in early January, it wasn't that crowded. Still almost impossible to get a photo without people in it, but the new phone cameras take care of that business. The treasury was a real highlight but the thing that impressed me most was the hospital. It's quite a large structure and there are a couple of informational signs if you walk down the stairs to the left and get under the wooden roof. Fascinating. It only costs 6 Euros to get in and I thought it was well worth more than that. The amphitheatre has incredible acoustics. You can stand on the concrete circle in the middle of the performance area and someone in the back row can easily hear you. It's in really good shape for its age too. :-) There are enough signs around that you really don't need a tour, but one would probably be worth the money too. We didn't have a tour but still enjoyed the visit very much.Visited January 2025Traveled with familyWritten January 7, 2025

We drove our rental car 60 km south along the coast from our Corinth hotel arriving at 9 AM. After paying $13 each, we took a self tour of this 1988 UNESCO sanctuary devoted to healing. The small museum had many local statues/sculptures and a large stone tablet that accounted for the expenses of building the 4th C BC temple. A short climb acquired the huge Theater with 34 rows of sculpted seats but a longer walk was needed to see the main area of the sanctuary, almost all in ruins; a large Banquet Hall, Temple remnants, Stadium, Dormitory and many more ruins with detailed descriptions.
Because we had studied the Wikipedia information earlier, our visit was completed in 1 hour.

This place is one of the more interesting archeological sites I have seen in Greece. Very fascinating ancient healing complex. The cost is 12 € per person, but there is a discount for children and retirees.
The large area includes the archeological sites with many structures, a small but well appointed museum and the nearby amphitheater.
It is important to take the time to read the explanations. It was quite a healing complex! We did not have a guide; if there is such an option visit with a guide which can be a major enhancement of the experience.

Thursday 8th October and we visited this ancient site which was the sanctuary of Asclepius the god of medicine.
It was also here where Hippocrates, the father of medicine, practiced and taught.
Rediscovered in in 1902 by the German archeologist Herzog.
Despite the ravages of time, natural disasters and removal of artefacts, this remains something special.
The entry fee was €8 and not €3 as listed on the website. It was possible to purchase a ticket for entry to here, the museum and Casa Romana, valid for 3 days for €15.
On entering the site we were totally amazed as to the size of the place, it was vast. We decided that the best way to see the place was to start at the top and work our way back down again.
As the site is laid out over 3 levels, we climbed the two massive flights of steps up to the top level, once we caught our breaths, we started our exploration.
There is so much to see and many eye catching features which included the vast arched retaining wall, the upright pillars of the Stoa and the various altars.

The space is wonderful and everything is well organized! But what ruined our mood was on the way out of the venue, when thirsty from the great heat we went to buy water from the canteen that is there as soon as you leave. The lady who served us was unacceptably rude both verbally and with body language!!! And that's because he was unimaginably displeased that one of our group of ten people, as soon as he heard that perrie water cost €4.50, changed his mind and bought plain water. It is very sad and questionable that there is no evaluation by the people in charge of archaeology, of the people to whom these spaces are made available to serve the visitors.

Everyone visits the theater, most people forget that 'this' is the most important area.
If your visit is all about ancient, classical Greece, don't miss it.
it is open as of 8 AM until 8 PM during summer time. It is surrounded by pine trees, well maintained and there is still a lot of archaeological work on going.
It has also one of the best remains of an old stadium with stands.
Just go and see for your self.

Asklepios - the Healing, Medicine God in ancient Greece was a very strong cult those days back in 4c BC.
A whole city emerged around the healing sources of Argolis plains - residential areas, sport complex, baths, hospitals and of course the main attraction - the Epidaurus theater, as well the Temples to Artemis and Asklepios.
The site is pretty vast and along the way are plaques explaining what it was. Seeing the site first you'll figure out how important it was and why exactly here the best theater was built.

The Sanctuary of Asklepios was surprising to us. We didn't expect to enjoy it more than Epidavros Theatre, but we did! Most of the large tour groups don't come into the sanctuary so it wasn't nearly as crowded as the theatre was. A lot of the things discovered here are at the large national museum in Athens so I enjoyed visiting here first.

The site is large but mostly unrestored although restoration efforts are ongoing. The site museum is small and the least interesting of similar type of museums. The Great Theater is the main attraction there and it is worth a visit.

A lot of visitors see the theatre as the main attraction at this site and don't bother to look at the full archeological remains.
This is quite a large site that is undergoing some restoration but there are paths and placards with information to explain all areas.
We were lucky to visit at a quiet time and enjoyed wandering around the site with very few other visitors..

Do they provide English information, headphones? and /or tour guides?
Thanks,
Ron from Canada

HI Ron,
There is English information -- rather extensive-- on placards. No headphones that I saw, nor did I see tour guides available on site. We pre-booked a guide through our hotel. She lives in Napfoli and met us there. I'm usually not much of a tour guide person, but this is an exception.
Have fun. It's an amazing place.
