A short walk from the car park takes you to this fortified church. There was someone there when we arrived, so we waited a few minutes until it was our turn for the tour. For €3pp, the guide put on an audio description in English, then she pointed to the fresco which were being described, which worked well. Then you could wander around at leisure. The frescos were incredibly well preserved and vibrant. It was quite something to see them. You can also buy postcards (€1) and a small guide to the frescos (€2).

I visited Hrastovlje in a weekend break to Slovenjia and it was one of the highlights of the trip.

I loved the little church. There was an old woman sitting there who asked us, just as we went in, where we came from. We told her that we were from Spain and she immediately selected a CD and played it in a small stereo: it was an explanation in Spanish of the peculiarities of the church, covering of course the eerie fresco of a "Danse Macabre" or "Dance of Death".

The village itself is quite remarkable: it´s in the middle of nowhere, and it really looks rustic and charming. Be careful if you come by car as we did: it was winter and everything was covered in snow; we got stuck in one of the hilly and uneven roads and we had a really bad time trying to reverse without plunging into a nearby plot.

We also had a chat with one of the villagers, an educated old man who could speak perfect English: he had been a POW in an Allied camp during the II World War, when he had to fight in the Italian army as that part of Slovenia was then an Italian territory.

So in summary one of this little treasures of places that you sometimes come across when travelling. Very recommended!

Wonderful tiny church with stunning frescoes including "dance of death". Well worth the diversion from the Ljubljana-Koper freeway. Audio presentation describes the frescoes in great detail

hmmm....lots of really great reviews. But this needs some context.
This church is tiny. Sure, it's in a nice location and the interior wall/roof paintings are interesting. However, you're in/out within about 5 minutes.
The church isn't publicly open. There is a number on the front and you call, and local person will come and open the gates for you. Inside is the church. They will play a recording (in whatever language) and all the paintings are explained. This takes more than 5 minutes, but unless you want to listen to an explanation of every single wall painting, you take a couple of pics, walk around the outside and then back into the car - there isn't much else to see/do.
You'll also need to pay a small fee (~5EU per person). Not alot I guess for one person I guess, but if a family of 4-5 turn up, relatively expensive.

On the way to Piran, there is a tiny little village in the middle of nowhere that has a church from the 12th century called Hrastovlje. It's full of wall murals including the Danse Macabre or the Dance of Death which is very very rare and is what this church is famous for. The location and simplicity and age of the church and its frescoes really give you a feel for what living in medieval days must have been like. The little village is outside the walls of the well-protected church. The pillars and windows are all a bit uneven, obviously handmade almost a thousand years ago! It's a very charming place that's off the beaten track.

Today we went for a trip to the village of Hrastovlje. Actually it is even before Koper, not around Piran (check it before!).
The most important attraction is the church with fresques (Dance of the Death). You can get guide in Slovenian, English and German - for sure. Entrance fee is 3€. In the village is also TouristInformationCenter - TIC - where you can get more infos about surrounding or even buy combined ticket (guided tour around village, church, 2 galeries and some more...). There are also few places to eat & drink (they opened at 12 today - on Saturday). Not far from church is also a statue called Šavrinka (it is on a small hill and quite high, you will see it). - close to one tourist farm.

We were looking for a place to stop on our way from Ljubliana to Croatia. This is somewhat tricky to find, and about 15-20 minutes off the highway, but do stop! It is at the outskirts of a very tiny town in Hrastovlje of adorable terra cotta-roofed homes, along a ravine. The church looks somewhat nondescript and small from the outside. We read that if you call the number posted on the door (between the hours shown - done by 2pm), a caretaker will arrive in 5 minutes and give you a tour for a nominal fee (3 Euros). It's all true! The church was built in 1475. It is completely covered, floor, ceilings, support beams, columns, in ancient paintings, telling stories from the Bible. The paintings are remarkably preserved. Such a hidden gem tucked away in the foothills. If you have time and you can get there in the morning or early afternoon, you really have to come here.

My wife and I were fortunate to have an old friend, an American expat living in Ljubljana, as a personal tour guide of Slovenia for 4 days. He showed us this little gem out in the middle of nowhere, and I mean that in a very good way -- the church is at the foot of a large hill and is surrounded by fields, a vineyard and a couple of restaurants (we ate a very nice lunch at Skrgat on a patio overlooking the church; highly recommended). We were truly and enjoyably far from the madding crowd. We visited the church in July and, with the exception of a staff person, had the church to ourselves for 20 minutes; as we were leaving another small group of 2 or 3 people were arriving. The church dates back to the 12th century and is surrounded by walls built in the 16th century to protect against Turkish invasions. The church is very small and rather simple in design. The major draw of the church is the astounding frescoes painted on the walls. The staff person gave us a fairly detailed tour/explanation in English of the frescoes, including the fairly famous Dance of Death. I believe there are audiotapes available as well if you need them. The frescoes are wonderful -- not the highest, grandest art you'll see from famous masters; rather, they are very good examples of what I imagine regular people saw as they worshiped 500 years ago in a small country church. I'm not particularly religious but I found them fascinating and quite moving.

An easy and worthwhile side trip when driving to the coast of Slovenia, or about 45 mins from Koper by car. Well preserved and unusual frescoes. This stop was one of the highlights of a month-long trip through Slovenia and Croatia.

We came upon this by chance on our way to the coast at Izola. We pulled off the main road looking for somewhere for lunch and ended up going down this valley.
The scenery is delightful, and the setting of the fortified church special.
The frescoes inside are amazing. There is a recorded audio tour in English (and other languages), that only takes about 10 mins - very interesting and only E2.
We had lunch in the nearby 'agro tourismo'- a big platter of local cured meats and cheeses with ltheir own wine for less than E10 - highly recommended.
