We are staying in Soriano nel Cimino and have a view of the castle from our flat. It is a grand castle dating to the early 1200s. It is run by the local University and is only open on the weekends. There is an exhibit displaying the farm implements of the valley, but the real reason for visiting is the view. Outstanding!

One of the many noble residences you find in the Italian country side, this one is not particularly well preserved, but is good to see one where they have made efforts to make it visitable. And it costs only 2 Euros.

Castles are always fascinating. This beautiful Italian one in Bomarzo is perched atop a hill and it's a lovely walk on narrow streets. It's been a prison as well, open for visits of the weekends now. We visited this after the amazing gardens and monster gardens near by at the Sacro Bosco do Bomarzo.

We walked up here from the small town after a visit to the 'Monster Park'. The small streets and passageways are delightful and the old steps would have seen many feet tread their ground. The main 'Doumo' and square at the top is picturesque and the surrounding walls give commanding views across the countryside. Well worth a stop off and walk up if only to enjoy the vistas.

Palazio Orsini is open to the public on weekends. It is a grand place to stroll through picking out the architectural details and ogling the ceiling and wall art. If you get a chance, catch a musical concert in the salon and don't miss taking a peek at the resident mummy.

The castle, then prison, sits on top of a hillside and lights up the night. The views from the top are spectacular. We had a young, pleasing guide who spoke great English and answered all of our questions. A small passageway to the top is worth the climb and the history is evident. Tour is by donation and well worth it.
