The Kolhid Fountain is located on David Agmashenebele Square in the heart of Kutaisi. This Attraction is new to the city. It was designed by architect David Gogichaishvili in 2011. The circular shape of the fountain consists of several levels. Each of them has gilded figures of animals - lion, ram, tiger, sheep, mountain goat (tura), deer. All of them are enlarged replicas of Bronze Age statues and jewelry found during the excavation of the Kolkhida Kingdom, most of which in distant times is located in the territory of Georgia and Kutaisi itself.
The Kolkhid State has played an important role in the history of Georgia. Colchid became well known for the ancient Greek myth of the Golden Fleece and the Argonauts. The Greek perception was that the country was situated on the edge of the world, and that the sun began its journey, moving across the sky. For a long time, it was thought that the once-rich kingdom was just a legend. However, the writings of ancient authors still suggested the reality of Colchida. The search was very long. And just when many in the scientific world thought there was no hope, the findings came out. The colchida did exist and was exactly as the ancient texts described it: powerful and rich. It was a golden kingdom with big cities.

Right in the center of the city. The pool with horses, tigers, rams and other animals and golden statues of Tamada is magnificent. These figurines are copies of figures found in archaeological excavations in various parts of the country. Gold represents the mine that once existed in the Kolcis Kingdom that ruled here. The waters flowing in light at night are even more beautiful. It is impossible to come to Kutaisi and not see this fountain.

The circular fountain is located on a traffic island in the central square of the city. It features enlarged versions of ancient jewellery discovered at a nearby archaelogical site.

The fountain has four levels with the animal figures placed on blue mosaic coated pedestals at different levels. The center piece of the fountain is a pair of golden horses placed at the highest level. Water spouting between the pedestals completes the effect.

The fountain is unique and definitely worth a short stop for some photos.

Colchis Fountain is in the middle of Tsentraluri moedani in the heart of the city. It is very intricate with some very nice pieces. As the fountain is on island in the middle of the square it is difficult to get a good view and even harder to get the perfect photograph so I bit the bullet and dodged the traffic and got right up to the structure to get a better view.

The fountain was opened in May 2012 and is based on the Colchian culture. The fountain contains sheep and goats and the distictive Tamada which sits on top and these are all large scale copies of the gold jewellery goats and sheep found in the archaeological excavations in Vani. The fountain is a fantastic sight and is hard to miss on a visit to Kutaisi.

Linking present-day Kutaisi with ancient Colchis, a tribal formation that was dissolved in 164 BC (Before Christ was even born) is obviously problematic. I guess every nation is looking for roots in the past of which it can be proud.

The objects that constitute the fountain are (enlarged) replicas of finds in excavations in Western Georgia. The originals are exhibited in the National Museum in Tblisi. In reality the objects -mainly of animals- are very small. The fact some of them were made of gold attracts a lot of attention. Many people worship gold. It brings along status. Perhaps the designer of this 2011 fountain has at least something in common with the Argonauts who according to Greek mythology went looking for the Golden Fleece in ancient Colchis. The Argonauts did not find it, but the fountain designer did.

For art lovers note the resemblance of some of the items to Cycladic images found in ancient Greece (Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens).
