If you’re visiting Alaverdi, it’s worth dropping by this conveniently located medieval bridge in the city. Walk up the steps tracing back centuries. Also this bridge boasts some of the best public views of the town and river. Free to visit!

We couldn't believe how much Soviet Union history there was in that region. Some of these old non operated mills and factories look like Chernobyl, but that beautiful bricked bridge, just beautiful!!!

This is a review for the 12th Century Sanahin Roman-era Bridge in Alaverdi, Armenia, and is NOT for the hotel called "Sanahin Bridge."

Sanahin Bridge is protected by UNESCO (ID #777-003) as part of the Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin UNESCO World Heritage Site with a 0.2 hectare protective zone around the bridge. The bridge is quite noteworthy because it is in a good state of preservation and was built in 1192 by the Roman Empire. According to scholarly analysis, the inscription on the bridge states that Queen Vaneni, wife of King Abas, commissioned the bridge and had a xac'k'ar erected in commemoration of herself and members of her family.

Made of basalt and adorned in remarkably-well-preserved carvings of cats, I understand that the bridge underwent some renovation in the 20th century, but still appears to retain all its original materials. You can park your car right in front of the bridge on Tumanyan Street and easily walk over the bridge. You'll have a view of the rather polluted Debed River. Generally speaking, Alaverdi is an industrial wasteland that has been polluted for a century by copper mining. The air reeks of chemicals and acid. But the Sanahin Bridge is a nice sight in an otherwise ugly town and I do recommend you stop and take a look if you're driving through.

Stopped here for about 10 minutes while on a tour. The area is vey quiet, the bridge has very ncie view over a river. The place has a lot of buildings from the Soviet era.

The bridge itself is worth visiting, with a rather sad looking "lion".as Alaverdi itself is a small ugly looking town trapped in a beautiful canyon, the bride is one of its highlights. Right next to Sanahin bridge there is an excellent little outdoors pub, with gazebos and sofas. It is really worth trying the local home made schnapps.

Sanahin Bridge is one of the most significant architectural constructions of medieval Armenia. It is located in Alaverdi city of Lori region, above the Debed River. In 12th century it was built under the auspices of Vaneni, sister of Zakare and Ivane Zakaryan, in honor of her husband king Abas Kyurikyan, who passed early. The bridge is located above narrow and fertile banks of the River Debed flow.

Good photo motive, conveniently located in downtown Alaverdi. Don't miss it when travelling from Haghpat to Sanahin!

An amazing bridge with a great view of the town and the Debed river. I liked the lions on the top of the bridge and the cable cars floating overhead.

This bridge had auto travel until the 1980's! It's located at the foot of a dilapidated copper mine. Look closely for the carvings.

Just a nice stop on the road, with a very good view on the old very photogenic sowjet delapidated factory.
