I was surprised to see this in a small village, off the beaten-track. A very old place (13-14th centuries) with pictures dating since, surrounded by a small village cemetery with a couple of centuries old tombstones. Very small entrance fee, keeper needs to be called to open the door when visiting.

Another great piece of history and architecture .... people from Maramures have created another masterpiece. Once more from the 17th century a church with an interesting history, here was found the "Codex of Ieud" ( some historians considering it one of the first writings in Romanian ... nice legend) - A former greek catholic church that is currently "Orthodox" (don't even ask !)
Once again the church is not open - but the phone number that you find is working - I've called and in a few minutes somebody showed up and we could visit the church (inside) lovely - it is very interesting - the technique of the fresos and painting is absolutely great - I'm not religious , however the artistic value of the place is undeniable.
(the new church at Barsana Monastery - and that has nothing to do with the old churches of Maramures! its a new one built after 1989 ... beautiful but different and not in the same category - has its paintings influenced by the style of the artists who painted Ieud church... great but a copy of Ieud ...).
Entrance is a little over 1 Euro .. but definitely worth it - don't forget to call the phone number , and pay attention to the visiting hours, since it would be a pity to miss on this.
Architecture is showing the same features the stone foundation the wooden structure and the 2 stepped steep roofing.
So, definitely a must see when you are in Maramures - go and see it.

We couldn't find anybody to let us in - possibly the priest had been called away - so we just sat in the churchyard for a while. With the painted wooden crosses and flowers and trees, the churchyard is a lovely place.

There's a lane up behind the church, which can take cars, then a few steps up to the churchyard, so people with mobility problems may need a little help.

Cross the bridge and pass the Museum in Leud to find one of the oldest churches in Romania. Be sure to take the time to call to have the door opened as the murals inside are exquisite. You will be given a torch for viewing and photographs are not allowed. This is definitely our favourite of the wooden churches of Maramures.

I visited this 700 year old church on Saturday 15th August - the doorman was present as were a couple of other tourists. What a beautiful church! The inside of the church is well worth seeing - the paintings within the church are stunning - the doorman kindly lent me a torch to see all details. The graveyard surrounding the church also has some beautiful headstones and the views from the hill where the church is situated and breathtaking. Well worth a visit!

One is required to call the caretaker to open the church door. So please have a mobile phone if you want to go inside the church. I suppose it is because this place is not a famous tourist area, also evident by non-souvenir booths. The church is small and dark. The caretaker lent us his torchlight to look at the paintings around the church interior. We spent about 15 minutes inside here. No photography allowed.

We visited this UNESCO heritage church in the village of Ieud. To gain entrance you might need to call the village person who holds the key. The church is set on a hill overlooking the cemetery. It was built in the early 1600's and an early written document of the Romanian language was discovered in its attic. The church is dedicated to the birth of the Virgin Mary and has some really nice frescoes inside.
