Western style toilets and air conditioning are a plus. Limited english translations a minus if u don’t know Tajik or have a guideVisited April 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 29, 2024
- mel7155Singapore, Singapore1,346 contributionsSimple museum of the historical and natural history of this city .Khujand is a small city and has an accompanying small museum . All the exhibits are in Tajiks of Russian. As such, you will need to hire a tour guide to tell you more about the museum . Exhibits are very simple but is sufficient keep you occupied for 30 minutes. Good to get a local museum guide or a tour guide for this tour.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 14, 2024

It's heavily devoted to the story if Alexander The Great, or 'The Macedonian' as he is called here. Sone lovely mosaics downstairs. Interesting exhibits but we had a guided tour in Engkish. I'm not sure how well you'd fare on your own.Visited August 2024Traveled with friendsWritten September 14, 2024

An absolute hotchpotch ! The outside is a total reconstruction in brand new white house bricks ; fairly recent photos show the original fortification in mud - could not be more fake if they had tried. Inside is a random collection of everything they could lay their hands on, from cave men to Stalin. The only interesting bit is the room downstairs illustrating the life of Alexander The Great ; this is early work from artist Jamshed Juraev who is now a celebrity in Tajikistan, deservedly so !
There is nothing authentic, archeological or historic about this place. At best it is an amusement park.

The new and well designed museum is located in the nicely renovated fortress.
It gives a good overview over the history of the region, beginning with Alexander the Great and ending with the independence of Tajikistan.
I recommend this museum to all visitors of Khujand.

First, let's talk about the 'fortification'. The original was made of mud-brick. The remnant portion by the river is clearly made of mud-brick and this is reinforced by all the period photos. So why make a Disney-style 'castle' out of modern house bricks? It doesn't seem at all appealing or authentic.
Let's move to the collection then. There was a decent collection of old pottery and other items from the archaeological site. You will get a sense of an old civilisation which was trading near and far. But really that's about all. The lights were mostly turned off and the interior was dim and uninviting. We were also unimpressed by the Greek-style wall mosaics from 20 years ago. Who comes to Khujand to see mosaics of Alexander the Great.
Entrance costs 15 somoni for foreigners.

This is a relatively small museum with interesting exhibits that have been carefully curated and tell a good story about the history of Tajikistan. The multi-lingual guides are impressive in their knowledge and demeanor. This is a museum for visitors of all ages and is easily accessible.

I didn't know what to expect when visiting Khujand and this museum, but it turns out that this is a great museum that has most complete description and highlight of life of the Alexendar the Great. The mural work of his life story is beautiful and nicely done.
It's in the basement of the museum.
You also learn about how the Tajis life through this museum.
It's right at the City Fortress, you won't miss it.

An English speaking guide came in specially on her day off to show us round. Not the largest museum we went round, but worth a look

We went to this museum which is across from the park where it seems there was a wedding photography season on – whilst we were there, 3 or 4 couples came for their photo shoots. We had a guide who was terrible – he rattled off his spiel at super speed so gradually the group made their own way. The museum has some excellent exhibits arranged chronologically but one wishes that there were more and better captions in English. The murals in the basement were interesting once you knew what they meant. There was a large map of the country as part of the Silk Route. This place is worth a visit – I think it must be the main attraction as we did not visit any other place except a restaurant for the night’s dinner.
