About
Follow the Goat at Velke Popovice Brewery and look under the lids of our brewmasters. We will show you how the real Czech beer - Velkopopovicky Kozel - is brewed. The picturesque historical brewery in which this great Czech beer has been brewed for more than 143 years is located only a short driving distance (15km) from Prague.

Kozal is an excellent Czech beer produced in the town of Velke Popovice about 20 miles from Prague.

It is easy to get to on bus number 363 from Opatov metro station. The bus leaves from the flyover above the metro station (from the side of the road opposite where buses park up). The fare costs kc24 and you get off the bus at the Velke Popovice Pivovar stop which is shown on an electronic sign in the bus. On leaving the bus you can check return bus times from the timetable on the bus stop on the opposite side of the road.

The brewery tour is interesting, informative and friendly covering both the history of the brewery and the brewing process. The brewery's symbol is a goat so it was good fun to both see the brewery goat and their white winter goat. Finally the highlight was a couple of samples in the historic cellar.

The timings of tours in various languages can be found on Kozal's website and places can be booked in advance online. Bus times appear to be about 90 minutes before tour times and these can be checked on Prague public transport websites.

Overall a great afternoon out from Prague that can easily be achieved on cheap public transport.

From the Opatov metro station in Prague take bus 363 (when you come up the steps from the metro take the exit to the left. And head up the spiral walk way to the next level. There you will find the bus stop). Bus takes 50 minutes and costs kc24 one way. The is a flat screen onboard showing the stops along the route. Get off at Velke Popovice Pivovar. Right outside the brewery. The entrance you need is just around the corner. In the direction the bus is going. Tour costs kc150. If you join a non English tour, you will be given a printed guide in English. You can taste a few beers in the brewery cellar during the tour (included in the ticket price). And meet Olda the goat at the end of the tour. The brewery has a small shop, which is worth a look. Selling t-shirts keyrings beer glasses etc. Bus back to Prague is opposite where you got off the bus. Check tour and bus times online.

We caught the Kozel Express train that runs on Sunday from Prague to the Kozel Brewery in Velké Popovice. The train was an old fashioned single carriage train which took 50 minutes to reach Velké Popovice. The ticket was Kc 390 & included the return train ticket & brewery tour (which is normally 150). Be aware the brewery tour on Sunday is only in Czech (English is on Tues/Frid/Sat). They have booklets of information in other languages & we were lucky enough to have some of the other group members kindly help translate things, but I felt we did miss out on some information. There is plenty of time after the tour to have lunch in the Kozel pub before being due back to the train at 14.40. The food at the pub (we had pork knuckle & chicken wings) was really delicious & probably the best I’d had since being in Prague for the week.

We visited the Kozel Brewery with a group of 10 Hungarian students (me being the tuor leader) recently and it became one of my highlights. After having spent an hour with Ada, a great, upbeat guide getting to know the history of the brewery and the processes of brewing (and seeing the goats!) we continued to the beer-tapping workshop where the beermaster showed us all how to tap beer in different ways.
Our ticket included 3 beers per person but those who wanted could get extra too.
Can only recommend: next time we'll visit again! :)

If you are Beer expert (as well as Beer Lover) you will enjoy it! Beatiful plant established around 1871 and opened in 1874. Perfectly located on nature spring water. Hi End equipped. Produced a variety of famous Velke Popovice beer. You will enjoy degustation as well as take a chance follow all steps of beer preparation process. This tour is not far from Prague - just about 23 km from the city center. Have a nice trip!

According to the brewery's website, tours are available in several languages.
If you come as an individual, they're not. In fact, the lady selling tickets couldn't even answer in anything else than Czech, but I was able to understand that coming back another day wouldn't help me.
I took the tour anyway, hoping for some help from the guide after all. I didn't get any help. Even the movie en route, which was in Czech, was shown with Russian subtitles (English was an option). I asked why, and the guide answered that there were 2 Russians in the group. There was - and they spoke Czech...
I went to the restaurant afterwards - to use my beer token and have a light lunch. I asked the waitress (also only speaking Czech) if the token was good for a non alcoholic beer (I was driving). Without answering me she fetched said beer, and when she returned I asked about the token again. It didn't pay for a non alco beer (!!!)
Yes, I am in the Czech republic - they speak Czech here. But this is the tourist industry, and they should expect tourists to be foreigners, shouldn't they?
Don't go, unless you're Czech or Russian.

Dear Laus, Thank you for your visit to the Velke Popovice brewery and for your feedback, which will help us improve the quality of our services. As the Velke Popovice brewery is frequented by many visitors from abroad, we make efforts to ensure our staff has sufficient language skills. On the date of your visit, however, an adequate replacement for the receptionist who usually performs this job was unavailable for operational reasons. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. We offer tours of the brewery in Czech, English, German, Russian and Hungarian. For the tours guided in a foreign language, a reservation should be done in advance. A minimum of ten persons are required to have a separate tour. In addition to these tours, we offer tours for individual visitors but only in the Czech language. Foreign visitors will be given a printed text of the tour available in eight different languages. This information has been published on our website and the text in the relevant foreign language will be automatically provided to all foreign visitors at the reception desk. The film which is shown on the tour for individual visitors is in Czech, with foreign-language subtitles. At one moment, only one foreign language can be chosen for subtitles - according to the language preferred by the majority of foreign visitors in the particular group. The beer coin presented to visitors on the tour can be kept as a souvenir or exchanged for beer at a nearby restaurant. At the time of your visit, the coin could only be exchanged for beers from the portfolio of the Velke Popovice brewery which does not include non-alcoholic beer. However, your comment has inspired us to include non-alcoholic beer in this offer and from now on, the coin can be exchanged also for a non-alcoholic beer brand produced by our partner brewery. Thank you very much for your inspiring idea! Please accept our apologies for the circumstances due to which your experience of the Velke Popovice visit did not come up to your expectations. We are ready to take all measures necessary to prevent this situation in the future and would be happy if you could visit our brewery again and see for yourself the effect of these measures. With kind regards, Michaela on behalf of Velké Popovice Brewery Visitor Centre

We were lucky with our tour as there was only our group of four and and two others who were also foreigners, so the guide spoke English instead of Czech.

Eventough we aren't great beer lovers the tour was really nice with all the history and facts. And the guide was really friendly and nice, 10 points.

There were no dull moments on the tour and we enjoyed all the way. And as we Fin's say 'terveydeksi'.

The tour of the factory was great, our guide very knowledgeable. It is a big group but the security keep everyone in tow. The place is immaculately clean and organized. A beautiful experience of the brewery.

This is a cool place to visit away from the typical Prague tourist locations, the guide was extremely informative, people work here with pride and obvious passion, for a great tasting beer.
