Hello, We took a rental car from Salzburg earlier today and checked into our apartment at St. Wolfgang overlooking the Wolgangsee. We will be based out of St. Wolfgang for our entire 5 day/night stay in the wonderful Salzkammergut region. We have visited Prague and Cesky Krumlov as part of our trip so far, are in Salzkammergut currently and will visit Vienna and Budapest next week. I can't answer all of your questions and I have spent a lot of time in the area and always stay at the Seebocken Hotel and the SchafbergBahn ride is Worth the money,great views from the top.Ride the boat on Lake Wolfgang.Salzburg is worth a full day or more.The Grossglockner road is the best drive that I have done and you can visit Well am See on the same day..I have dritten in the Rockies and Sierras in the US and the Grossglockner road will not disappoint you on a clear day. It's a dense itinerary but still feasible. You should check train times in advance because your intention to take evening trains may eventually not be fulfillable. For instance, there is no late evening train to Zurich. The last train to Zurich leaves Innsbruck at 17:50 hours.
