Excellent tour of the DMZ. Very well explained by our tour Guide Hoa. Also had an excellent lunch at the Tam’s Cafe with very affordable prices.

Although we only contacted Tam's Cafe one day in advance, Mr Tám was very responsive and helped us sort out how to get from Hoi An to Dong Ha. We booked the demilitarised zone tour for the day so we could catch the 4 pm bus to Phong Nha. Transport went smoothly, our guide Mr Hoa was waiting for us when we got off the bus in Dong Ha. The tour itself was very interesting, Mr. Hoa's English was excellent (which is not always the case with vietnamese tour guides) and he gladly answered our many questions, even about his personal experience during the war, which was a big plus for us. We are two young women on a pretty low daily budget, but spending some extra on this tour was entirely worth it for us. I would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of Vietnam.

Our family of 4 (2x adults, 2x 15year olds) did Mr Tam’s cafe tour- with pick up from our hotel in Hue. We then drove to Tam’s cafe in Dong ha- where we left our bags and had a freshen up. We could buy drinks/snacks- and their smoothies were delicious! We then went on the DMZ tour with our guide Hoa and a driver. Amongst the sites we visited were the unmarked memorial/burial site, the actual north/south Vietnam border (the 17th parallel- including the re- constructed bridge and the memorial on both sides. The bridge was reconstructed, as a reminder of the war- as the original was destroyed). On the northern side was a small museum with photos of the time of the division. Then it was time for a break for lunch- at a local restaurant (we were the only people there- but delicious, simple meal of fish and rice). Next up was the Vinh Moc tunnels- an amazing experience stooping and walking along (and down/up the 3 different levels). You also come out onto the ‘water front’ which is where some of the tunnels exited. The movie shown before we went into the tunnels was about 40min- worth seeing, but get ready for the communist propaganda! After that, we headed back to Mr Tam’s cafe to have another freshen up, and to retrieve our packs. As we were going on the night train to Hanoi, we opted to do a ‘small’ dinner tour in Dong Ha (to ensure we had eaten, and to have something to do). At this point, Hoa took over the driving, and our first stop was at a restaurant to try some specialties of Dong Ha- ‘small rice paper discs with crackling/shrimp, and banana leaves with rice parcels (2 different types). Delicious!! Our next stop at a different restaurant (which we again drove to) provided us with meat skewers, star fruit and cucumber to wrap into a rice parcel and eat. Already feeling full (and this was only a ‘small’ food tour!), we had a final stop to eat roasted duck!! Hoa was an awesome guide for the entire day. He was entertaining as well as informative with great English. He then dropped us at the Dong Ha train station (nothing to write home about!), to wait for our Hanoi night train! Would highly recommend this tour. We booked it months in advance online- and received emails confirming everything. They made it easy- especially as we were between accommodation and waiting for train with teenagers!

I have had several contacts by email with Tam because we had to fit one day DMZ into a tight schedule. So we booked a transfer from Hue airport to Dong Ha, one night at Tam's guesthouse, one day DMZ by car ending with a transfer to our hotel near Hue. Mr Hoa picked us up at the airport, on the way to Dong Ha he showed us a few places where he had lived as a boy during the war. Next morning we went for the DMZ together with an English girl. DMZ was for us a visit we couldn't skip. Do not expect many stunning things; that's why you need a good guide who makes history vivid again. We had a driver and Mr Hoa was our guide. He makes the tour special, telling more personal stories, really taking care of his guests. For example, the visit of a big war cemetery would have been less impressive without his comments. We also had a lot of time to visit the Vinh Moc tunnels and got a good impression of how life was in there. Nice, simple lunch in a local restaurant with veggie dishes and meat. At the end, Mr Hoa drove us to Hue. Excuses to him for spending so much time in finding our hotel. We had no idea it had such a remote location. Anyway, he was an important part of one of the most special days in our holiday

I spent just 1 night at Tam's Cafe and guesthouse. The room was very clean, the en-suite bathroom clean and all was working correctly. I had a great dinner and breakfast, the chef woman provided me excellent food. The staff gave me precious information about how to go to Laos by bus and other useful information. Very professional and really friendly! All that services has been provided for a very reasonable price. Highly recommended!
