Approximately 12km out of town, a variety of floating restaurants situated on a shallow agricultural lake.
Great on the weekends with friends or in the afternoon for a quiet beer.

We cycled here (rented bikes from ‘The Bored Room’ in Savannakhet) and it was really beautiful. We were the only tourists there and it was very peaceful! About 8km cycle which is reasonable, roads are okay, quiet once out of town, not too bumpy. From here we cycled a further 8km to That Ing Hang, and then came back around in a loop! An enjoyable few hours in the countryside!!

If you like to cycle, it's a nice jaunt from Savannakhet and on the way to That Ing Hang. You can ride further out to more lakes.

There are loads of gazebo restaurants around the lake. I've never tried any of them, but they'd be a good place to hang out with some friends, drink some beer Lao and enjoy some food together.

It's a healthy bike ride and up hill from Savannakhet on dirt roads.. just manageable on the single speed bikes. Your trip back to Savannakhet will be a lot easier.

I'm a strong rider and it was about a 30 minute ride at top speed to get there. There are plenty of little shops for food and water along the way.

You definitely should go there by the sunset time. I've been there twice, but I can tell you the difference is amazing.
The reflect of the trees and bungalows in the water + wonderful sunset colors will let you take amazing pictures.
It is very relaxing as well. However a bit far from centre, but rent a bike or scooter and you should be fine :)

During the week-end only you can have food there (I have been during the week, so it was empty, but better this way).

We visited the site and enjoyed the experience with our Laos friends in the dry season. It's unlike any other place we have seen and guess that this Laos style here is very true to what the locals find as amusing and a little bit exclusive. You have to be seated in the hut on the lake to find out what's about it. The huts is primitive but functional. The service is good but I don't know how much english speaking and understanding they actually do here as our friends did the talking. If you're having time for the 'Laos ways' you could try this place. On the way there's sort of parks of lotus flowers in the lake having stunning colors

this is a really good way to spend a few hours. We combined it with a trip to the stupa. Both were nice if not remarkable. It was dry season, so the lake was small, but it is cool ,relaxing, restaurants are nice, buffalo walking around, people fishing. Bust a relaxing way to see a bit of laos countryside. Recommend.

Being the peak of hot/dry season not the ideal time to go (April 2015) as the waters in the lake have receded a long way, but none the less you can still see what a natural scenic picnic spot mainly for locals this is - with many small waterside sala's on stilts over the water.

Surrounding the lake is real rural Lao with farmers hard at work and plenty of livestock (cows, pigs and buffalo) wandering around.

Note: I took my car in from Thailand and found the lake myself but I'd expect local transport to charge perhaps 200 baht to take you to the lake. Its about 6km east of Savanakhet town on an dirt road.

Other than the restaurant with huts over the lake there is nothing to see or do here. Not far from town but the heavily pot holed road makes the journey take ages.

After 6 months in Savannakhet, I had my first visit to the lake and was amazed! Friends and I headed to the lake on motorbikes and it was less than 1/2 and hour's ride away (mind the pot holes!) from where I lived. The first sight of the lake is a surprise (rare in this area unless you go looking). The ambience, the views, the buffalo in the water, and then all of the eating places built on the edges of the lake - I couldn't believe I hadn't know about this place before. Food and drink were excellent - find a good hut over the water with a view - and just relax and chill!
