I booked a 5 day safari made up of Selous (2 days) and Mikumi and Udzungawa Mountains (3 days). Mr Majenda looked after me very well. Victoria accompanied Mr Majenda on some days and she was nice too. I liked Mikumi more than I would. I saw a lot of stuff even though it is a rather small park. On one night an elephant came up to the back patio of the Mikumi Wildlife Lodge room that I was in. It was an experience to be woken up by the sound of branches breaking and to shine a light out and see the trunk of the elephant swaying, so close to me. I also heard the sound of a lion but did not see it. The next morning at breakfast the Mikumi Wildlife Lodge staff told me the elephant had destroyed their football goalpost.

The one thing that was not great was the 8 day 7 night Northern Safari that I asked Mr Majenda to help me book with one of his partner tour companies. That was a complete disappointment. I have written a review on that for African Queen Safari. But the southern tour went ok.

Be warned Tanzania is a bit off the beaten path so one has to be prepared to rough it! Even if Mr Majenda does try to make us comfortable!

Watu Safari is Tanzanian owned and operated. We booked them after exhaustive research into the different tour operators, and were not disappointed. You can trust them to give you an unforgettable experience. They were in great contact with us in advance of the trip, and even allowed for a last minute 1 day delay that we required.

You might be mistrustful of the quality of this tour because it is far cheaper...but I assure you the food, lodging, and guide are all top quality.

Our guide, Hamad, arrived exactly on time to pick us up from our Dar Es Salaam hotel. He drove us to breakfast and then on to Morogoro. The vehicle was clean and his driving was great: safe but not slow. The ride was 6 hours in total before reaching the park, and it wasn't entirely comfortable, so be prepared.

Hamad took us to lunch and then into Mikumi National Park. Through long experience and keeping in touch with other guides, he was able to efficiently direct us to all the wildlife.

He paid close attention to what we found interesting and focused on keeping us happy. For example, he pointed out a bird and saw that neither my wife nor I cared about birds. He didn't mention birds again. Later, my wife pointed out a bird herself, saying it was 'beautiful." Hamad pointed out 'beautiful birds' to my wife when he saw them after that.

Every detail of the trip was handled by Watu. He checked us into our hotel (see separate review of TanSwiss Lodge) and helped us order food and ensured we were comfortable throughout our time with him.

After two days touring Mikumi, we had seen all the animals that live in the area. We took a drive up to Udzungwa to hike the rain forest trails. This drive was long and bumpy. It made for an incredibly long 3rd day, but I think if you are so close to this much natural beauty, it is a shame to skip it. Hamad checked us in with a guide for the Udzungwi National Park, fed us breakfast, and sent us on our way. The full waterfall hike is about 10k, and a pretty demanding hike. The views of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape are worth it. We saw monkeys and lizards, spiders, a snake, and even a couple of crabs. CRABS!

The ride back to Dar Es Salaam from Udzungwi took 8 hours. The inevitable traffic near the city tested our worn out patience. Hamad had been driving for 3 straight days but was all smiles and encouragement. He delivered us to our hotel safe and sound and tired and satisfied.

Bring shillings. You'll want to tip people who help you along the way, and 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10000 bills are nice to hand out when someone deserves it.

Bring sunscreen. You'll want to be standing up or seated on top of the vehicle to enjoy the surroundings.

Try the Ndizi Stew. Bananas and beef!

Be patient with the processes. You'll need to check in to the parks, have your ID recorded, pages stamped. You'll be stopped at roadside checks. Traffic in the city will stop for minutes at a time. But Watu will get you where you're going so relax and enjoy yourself.

Fabulous day trip with Watu Safaris. We were so lucky to see many animals and our driver spotted a group of lions which was a huge highlight. Lunch was in a gorgeous spot too!

Unprofessionalism and disappointment guaranteed.
My family and I experienced a nightmare with Watu Safaris managed by this man called Mr. Majenda. What was supposed to be a relaxing and memorable getaway with my two year old son and husband turned into a horrible cascade of unpredictable and disappointing events.
Before the trip:
Mr. Majenda and I were in good communication and he seemed quite courteous and civil. We arranged the trip for July 19th and 20th. We were to be picked up from Dar-es-salaam at 5:30 am and be driven to Mikumi to spend the day, sleep in the premises and continue our safari the next morning. Two days before the safari, I emailed Mr. Majenda to make sure if all plans were in order and he assured me like the professional I thought he was that all is well. He told me that my driver would contact me to make arrangements. I didn't hear from the driver so I contacted him the night before the trip. The driver had no idea about the trip. He told that he thought it was for the 29th and not the 19th. Mind you, Mr. Majenda had prepared my invoice with the correct dates and all emails had the dates of the safari as subject. So the driver then asked me to wait so he can clarify with his boss Mr. Majenda. They somehow managed to hire another driver from a different company right around midnight. I was notified by text about this new driver situation.
Day of the trip:
We woke up early to prepare and were ready by 5am. Time of pick up arrives and no show. So I call the new driver. He picks up the phone, surprise! I had just woken him up. He told me he was not briefed about the pick up time and that he was on his way. I honestly think this guy was innocent in all this.
So we get around 6:15am and head out. We arrive at Morogoro and meet Mr. Majenda at Watu Safaris offices to complete our payment. He says sorry without any explanation and proceeds to deduct the payment. We head to Mikumi. At this point, I am already very dissatisfied and honestly feeling let down. What else could go wrong?
At Mikumi park:
We arrive at the gate, present our IDs and ask for our booking for lodging that night. Guess what? None of that exists! After almost an hour of calls, no success as to where we were going to spend the night. Our entrance fees were supposed to be covered in our safari package but we ended up paying out of pocket to get into the park. At this point, I was expecting at least a call from Mr. Majenda but nothing. Two hours later, I decide to call him. I was very furious. He gave me a half type of apology and blamed it on his driver for mixing up the dates. I told him to own up for God's sake! He said that they had booked us at a hotel nearby to spend the night and that "it was more expensive than the lodges" that we were originally supposed to stay in. I was so disgusted. If I wasn't pregnant and also with a 2 year old, we would have driven back home the same day. We ended up staying at that hotel and completed the trip next morning.
We did not get a personal apology from Mr. Majenda, nor did he call us to make sure we were okay. He didn't care about us after getting his money. The only thing he did was pay for the hotel bill including all meals and offered to reimburse us our entrance fee. I understand that some things can go wrong when planning a trip but in our case, all things went wrong and for this reason I do not consider Mr. Majenda a professional.

Hello Joan, Thank yo for the review and concerns about our services Note that no one plans to fail or disappoint a customer. Very sorry that your trip had to be like this after all the planning and arrangements we had already made for it. - The first driver already prepared and after the date mix up (which was a typing error during our communications 6 in preparations for the trip) we managed to get another vehicle for the safari, you do not just get a car and not brief the driver about pick up time or the trip, all pick up start from 05:30 hours to around 06:30 hours so in average you were picked on time. - On the day of the trip there was problem with our payment cards at the gate, we had other guests too in the park who their fees were not yet paid too and to make your entry quick we asked you to make payment for your fees to save time rather than waiting and these were refunded to you. So it was not a delay to you only but to everyone we were to pay using our cards. - I personally did make hotel reservations at the Mikumi Park cottages about 6 days before the trip and i was surprised too that there were not room for you, that's why we had to call the park and see what happened. They had park authority guests and that all bookings were taken including your room too and somehow they replied we had a room while making the booking. In that case i had to find a room outside the park where you stayed for the night. - We already had a long talk on the phone about the situations and i tried my best to explain what happened. I would still apologize again for having this experience but to assure you that we don't plan for bad experiences to happen and sometimes hap shittens in a way that we can not control. - The money you paid it was never "my money" this was your money to pay for all the services you were to use and whatever left is for our service charges to organize the trip. You paid 900,000 tsh out of which i paid 790,000 for the car for 2 days (395,000 per day), paid for your entry fees 2 days 22,000, paid for your accommodation and dinner 102,000. This makes total costs paid for your trip is 914,000, which is 14,000 plus more than what you paid. This is just to show you that it was not for money, it is just that sometimes things happens in a way that you never expect. Again i'm sorry for whatever happened to make your trip a bad experience, we strive to provide great experience and yours was not the one we expected.

Majenta Mhutila was the owner and our guide for our Safari day. He speaks very good English and knew exactly where to find all the animals in this enormous park. He was pleasant and has a degree in Wildlife Biology which qualifies him not only to show you where the animals are but also to explain their habitat and life cycle. It was interesting to learn how the animals interact with each other. Could not have asked for a more knowledgeable and accommodating guide. We saw every single type of animal that lived in this park, including Lions and leopards. Breakfast and lunch was included at an open wildlife camp right in the park where we could watch the animals as we ate. Highly recommend this company and guide.

My wife and I caught a bus from Dodoma and got off at Morogoro. Mjenda of Watu Safaris was waiting for us as previously arranged by email. He then drove us to Mikumi game park and gave us two fabulous days in the park. Mjenda organised all our accommodation and meals within the park. It was a remarkable place to stay because we saw wildlife wander through the cabin area.
The highlight was the hippo pool with big hippos and large crocodiles keeping a wary distance from each other.
Mjenda then drove us to Dar Es Salaam and delivered us to our hotel. Watu Safaris gave us excellent service. Mjenda was a very knowledgeable safari host who willingly told us about the wildlife and the country. We really enjoyed his professional and courteous guidance. if we ever get back to Tanzania we will certainly go on safari again with Watu Safaris.

We went on a two day trip to Mikumi National Park from Dar es Salaam.

We had booked our tour directly with Watu Safaris a few weeks in advance, and Majenda, the owner, was helpful and prompt with every response. Communication went smoothly all the way from the first contact to the end of our safari. Majenda even took the time to meet us on the way, even if he had arranged for us to have a great guide already, Hamad.

Hamad showed a lot of knowledge about the wildlife and nature of both Tanzania and Mikumi. He was friendly and a good chat who kept us companied also during meals.

We did not want to get too high expectations about what game we would see during our short trip, but we were lucky enough to experience lions, elephants, hippos, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, jackals and a huge variety of birds and antelopes.

We stayed inside the park in the standard park cottages. They are clean with good beds, so if all you are seeking for is a comfortable place to sleep and freshen up, it is ok. Remember that water and electricity is not inexhaustible within the park. For a longer stay, or if you have high standards, you might want to upgrade (possible both within the park and outside). If you are lucky, you can hear the animals of the Savannah during the night. We had an unforgettable experience staying within the park - elephants, impalas and baboons were keeping us companied for lunch inside the camp!

Meals are generous and well planned both on the 5 hour travel to and from Dar, and within the park. We were picked up at our hotel at precisely 5 am, had breakfast in Morogoro around 8, got lunch at noon and dinner after the sunset game drive. Breakfast after a short sunrise game drive, followed by a last game drive before returning to Dar (lunch on the way back).

Highly recommended if you are spending time in Dar es Salaam and want to go inland for a couple of days on Safari!

We had a great time in Mikumi. My sister and husband were visiting and we went to Mikumi. We finally end up to go with my Tanzanian friends so we were five. The whole things was improvised two days before and Majenda was incredibly flexible to accommodate our needs. We had a great time all along. Ahmad and the car were perfect for the trip. We were lucky (although our guide Ahmad helped the luck) and saw four of the big five. The Tan swiss hotel was great and there also we had great time and good food. All in all, my sister went back to Europe full of good memories.

After researching the safari tour operators for a while I decided to go ahead with Watu for two reasons. One - the owner Majenda was willing to accommodate our needs in the safari while most had the attitude of -here is the package, take it or leave it! Two-He was willing to work and provide great suggestions based on our budget, both $$ and time!! He was very communicative and didn't pull any surprises as most tour operators do!! He came the previous day and took our questions after a briefing on what to expect and what to do to make the trip good. The tour driver Hamad was very patient, responsible as he drove within the speed limits and kept his cool in spite of a license-less driver, driving a brand new Mercedes for a company trying to pass in a reckless manner and in the end damaging his Mercedes considerably!!!! The costs were extremely competitive and we had a great time in the lodge. If you are looking for a good, budget safari- contact Majenda and he will do it for you, especially if you are looking at Southern Tanzania tours. The vehicle was great and comfortable as well. Overall for short safaris-2 -3 days, Watu is the one to go. If I were to do it again, without any hesitation I will contact Watu and Majenda to fulfill my needs. To provide an example, we had a water safari[boat rode in Rufiji river], regular game drives- one day and another 4 hrs the next day and a walking safari with a bush-man!!!! At the end you have to have the luck to see the animals and in the one day we could see everything except a Leopard and bisons.

We experienced a three-days safari, organized by Watu Safaris. It was our first safari and we have been totally satisfied! Majenda, from Watu Safaris, organized everything according to our schedule and budget. We did game drive (during days, sunrise and sunset) and also walking safari (which is also an interesting experience because it allows to discover things that you cannot see in a car (animals' footprint, bones,...)).

Many thanks to Majenda and Watu Safaris for these perfect three days!

Hope to experience a new safari with you soon!
