The area

Address
Neighborhood: Frederiksberg
Located between Noerrebro and Vesterbro you’ll find Frederiksberg, which is actually a municipality in itself but completely surrounded by Copenhagen. Here there are several fine theaters, from the experimental to the great Det Ny Teater (The New Theater) which specializes in transcribing the great London and New York musicals into Danish, and has done so for several years with huge success. In Frederiksberg you’ll find Denmark’s most beautiful (and expensive) city villas. These 4-5 square miles form the Beverly Hills of Copenhagen. Here you’ll also find Frederiksberg Have (Garden) which sports huge outdoor concerts, from classical to electronic dance music. To top it off, dining options range from cozy family restaurants to some of the area’s most trendy cafés.

    Happy animals - happy visitors
Decided to pay the zoo a visit during a city break to Copenhagen. Had the Copenhagen Card and so was included in this. I can be a little hesitant when it comes to zoos as I need to get a feeling the animals are well cared for and have plenty of space. This zoo definitely gave me all of the right vibes and I would say well worth a visit. Was here as two adults but it would be a brilliant place to bring children - plenty to do and the way the enclosures are set out, plenty to see. There’re were some great photo opportunities for those who enjoy that aspect of a visit. You really felt ‘up close and personal’.

    Best zoo I’ve been to
The best zoo I’ve been to. Easy access via the number 7A bus from the central areas that stops right outside. If you have the Copenhagen Card (which is well worth getting) you don’t need to use the main queue and can go straight to the turnstiles. You can see so many animals up close. Enclosures are a good size. We took about 2 hours to go round but with kids you can span it out a bit longer with play parks. And they have elephants and a polar bear! Never seen elephants in a zoo. They had a great space and a beautiful baby in tow. Lovely day out and well worth visiting.

    Copenhagen Zoo
We have visited quite a few zoos and always tend to visit one when we travel. Have to say this was easily one of the best zoos we have been to. Surprisingly big given its central location. Nice and clean, seemed to be plenty of room for the animals, some of the themed areas were really impressive and there looked to be quite a lot of work going on to make it even better. It’s included on the CPH card which will get you in for no extra cost which is really good because it would otherwise definitely be worth the entry fee. Easy to get to from central Copenhagen. Would definitely recommend.

Quick stop on way to airport
We went on the way back to the airport so wanted to know if they had luggage storage, I called up to ask. They have different sized lockers which will fit most sizes of suitcase. They cost 10 krone, they needed coins but the staff let us pay on card and gave us the coins. It didn’t take us that long to walk round, it’s not massive but nice to spend a few hours.

    Best Zoo Ever
This is hands down the best zoo we have ever visited. All the animals are content in their enclosures and they’re breeding which is a sign the animals here are thriving. Beautifully clean and well maintained. Loads of places to sit, have something to eat or drink and watch the animals. Absolutely wonderful. Would definitely recommend.

    Nice
Place is nice and lots of activities available. Nice animals and really organised on the path to take to see everything. I can say it is reeeealy a lot to walk but this is more like information. I cannot take it as disadvantage… some people like to walk 😃

    Weekend visit
Entry included with the Copenhagen Card. The Zoo is split into two parts with a tunnel beneath the main road to connect them. It was nice to visit a Zoo where the animal enclosures are set up slightly differently to the UK. Maybe it was because of the warm weather we had, but it was unusual that most animals were out & able to be seen . Didn't really allow enough time to do it full justice, but great all the same.

Nice experience and worth the trip
This was a nice experience and worth the trip. Although parts of the area were under reconstruction, we were able to see all the animals. The park was clean and neat, and transparent. We ate hamburgers for lunch in the park and they were good. So we can recommend it. Both hamburgers and chicken burgers were good. Good toilet facilities. The goats found the children (7 years old) very fun to feed. Here the children could be inside the fence to feed (bark from branches lying in the fence) and irrigate the goats. These were visited several times kids our visit. There is also the opportunity for the kids to be with some of the other animals in the farm area, so we recommend to check the activity list that is in the park.

A huge, fantastic zoo in the heart of Copenhagen. Strongly recommended
Very large zoo in Copenhagen itself. The encloures were very large, but have many walkways so you can get very close to some animals. Highlights for us were the Polar Bears, they were swimming around in transparent pools so were easily visible and you could appreciate their size, strength and elegance: The elephants were also amazing, hearing the infrasound was enchanting. We spent several hours there, there is a lot so see and do and the prices for food were not outrageous as in most zoos. Signs in Danish and English were also very ingeresting and informative. We used our Copenhagen card, this is well worth it if our are planning on sightseeing as it includes entry to may attractions and free transport.

    Must visit for all ages!
This is the best zoo I’ve ever visited. The animal enclosures are exceptional, thoughtfully designed to mimic their natural habitats. The animals appear happy and thriving, with many of them actively engaging in their environments. It was heartwarming to see young ones born in the zoo itself. The variety of species is impressive, ranging from majestic polar bears and adorable red pandas to tiny, vibrant frogs—truly a jaw-dropping experience. It's a must-visit for all ages!

The zoo, where the animal enclosures are very spacious, but people need to stomp their feet to get a closer look at one animal or another. At the beginning of the zoo we were met by polar bears, which were interesting to watch. Also for a long time hung in a room with insects, where it was curious to watch the ants work. Have you seen giraffes drinking from a waterhole? We were lucky to see that, funny.
The observation tower, for a fee, can be skipped.

We came here on a cold winter day,but all the animals were or outside or in the heated space. The zoo is huge and you can experience everything without worries about weather conditions. We enjoyed polar bears swimming above our heads, hippos swimming around us and we even got a chance to touch the giraffes while they were in the heated space. Would highly recommend to everyone!

We found the zoo by accident when on the bus heading to somewhere else. As we love zoos, we decided to go in. So glad we did!

There is a tower as you enter which you have to pay extra for (we felt that this was a little unreasonable so didn’t bother).

There are many animals here and many eating places- literally everywhere! We didn’t eat at any.

We felt some enclosures were a little small such as the lions, sea lions and leopard as the small wombats had more room. People smoked around the zoo and again we felt that this was not appropriate. There are signs asking for quiet in certain areas and to not tap the glass but these were ignored by the majority of the visitors as not staffed. This was a shame, we felt.

However, the pandas and polar bears were the talking point! Just wow! We got to get really close to the polar bears which was wonderful.

They also have an African area which was great.

Still absolutely well-worth a trip but hopefully the zoo will take on board the comments.

Copenhagen Zoo is advertised as follows: “With more than 4,000 animals from all over the world, Copenhagen ZOO is one of Denmark's most visited attractions.” It is located next to Frederiksberg Slot, not to be confused (which I did for a moment, my fault) with Frederiksborg Castle, which is much farther away from the city center.

Our Copenhagen Discover Card gave us free access without any issue. So far so good. But when browsing the area, all signage was in Danish, devoid of any English translation. Of course, what a zoo usually offers for visitors, is common all over the world, so with some guessing we found our way to e.g. the pandas. But only a single panda was present, busy eating bamboo and ignoring everything around. Similarly, at the next location we got only one bear, withdrawing after a rock soon after we arrived. The story repeated itself, with variations in the sense that in some places there were no animals visible at all. Only the kangaroo collection counted some 20 animals.

We are at a loss how in the world they dare to advertise with 4,000 animals. Their housing and playground look boring and derelict, depressingly so. We were very lucky that we got free access with our Discover card, otherwise we would be pressed to ask our money (around 35 euro) back, due to underperforming the advertisement, and offering absolutely no value for money. For a capital city like Copenhagen, this is not what you expect.

2 stars instead of 1 because I'm sure the Zoo is amazing but we won't be able to visit.

I bought tickets a year ago but couldn't go due to our baby being sick.
Since the tickets are valid for a year, we decided to book another trip to Copenhagen to use them.
Unfortunately, the only available weekend is a few days after the validity of the tickets ends.

Believe it or not but the customer service won't extend the validity of the tickets for a few days, or even offer a discount.
It is even more stupid knowing that we will be coming with 3 new visitors!

This means that they'd rather leave 2 adults and a 2.5 years old boy unhappy, than gain 3 more entries... I really don't understand the logic behind this.

I am definitely not paying again for 2 new tickets to visit the Zoo.

A unhappy family.

Even if some animals were not visible (some work in the bear sector in particular), this human-sized zoo divided into 2 parts (access under the road to connect the 2 sectors) is very family-friendly. You can observe polar bears outdoors or underwater. Several food outlets are present in the zoo which is accessible by bus from the city center

Probably one of my favorite zoo experiences. I live in the Colorado in the USA and have even been to the famous San Diego Zoo, which I love The experience in Copenhagen did not disappoint. When we entered the zoo we were immediately mesmerized by the beautiful lion and lioness chilling neck and neck. The panda sat on her back and ate her bamboo and entertained us for the longest period of time. The other animals were active. They had a baby elephant and hippo. We could even walk through the kangaroo's enclosure. The giraffes were eye level with us and we were able to get a few ear scratches in. It was October, so not crowded.

Our lodging was close by the Copenhagen Train station at Vesterbrogade which was a convenient 40 minute walk from there. We could have taken public transportation but to locate the connections and wait for the bus, our walk worked and before we knew it, we had already arrived at the Copenhagen Zoo entrance!
We purchased a Copenhagen Card which was very convenient as we did not have to line up to purchase our entry tickets. The Copenhagen Zoo is set up in such a wonderful organized manner and the animals are all in displays that offer the visitor a nice view.
Upon entry, while passing the lions, we had to stop for the family of lions including the cubs posing for us. Initially we thought it was just statues as they were not moving but we realized they were actually real!! Such an unbelievable sight that I have never encountered in a zoo!!
Copenhagen Zoo builds the animal habitats with such precision that the surroundings are easy for the visitor to view the animals.
The Giant Pandas were on display- one visible from the Bistro Pan Pan and the other one was visible in the outside munching on bamboo. Such a show!!
The baboons and lemurs were also fun to view as they were climbing, running back and forth in their indoor and outdoor enclosures. The gift shops were nice also as there were some unique items found.
It was quite an enjoyable visit at the Copenhagen Zoo. We definitely recommend a stop here to enjoy front row sightings of many types of wildlife.

Large zoo with a lot of different and varied animals, however despite other reviews we were really unimpressed with the space of the enclosures. The larger animals (polar bears, elephants, tigers but Lions especially) had very small enclosures, far from having enough space to roam free.

They also seemed to be pacing a lot and looked bored and unhappy. Very disappointing and sad to see. Hope they are actively doing something about this.

Animal enclosures were way too small for most animal exhibits. I counted six lions in an exhibit probably for two. The thing that put me off the most was the disgusting conditions most of animals were living in. Many exhibits looked neglected and were covered in feces that appeared to not have been cleaned up recently. In the hippo exhibit the water was so dirty you could barely see the hippos! I truly hope more people comment on the deplorable conditions these poor animals are living in so the zoo takes notice and takes better care of the exhibits and animals.

One more thing to note, there were a couple exhibits where I felt the animals were out at risk by the visitors. The kangaroos and the mongoose weren’t protected well enough from the general public putting their safer at risk.
