If you have time (at least two hours) and want to get a good impression of the fortifications and the city wall of Znojmo, go to the tourist info and get the leaflet about the various discovery walks.
W chose the Tower Walk and enjoyed it very much, because the remains of the towers are very different and each has a beauy of its own. Besides, you get an excellent impression of Znojmo as a whole. You can go inside at least one of the towers, then you have to pay a small entrance fee, but the view is spectacular.

Outstanding views from the city walls. Actually whole historical city of Znojmo is worth a longer trip. I have to recommend city underground as well. From the broader perspective I recommend to visit also Vranov nad Dyjí (chateau) and Bítov (castle). During the way to those two attractions, in case you are travelling in warmer months, I recommend to stop by the road where small sellers are offering lot of good quality home made/grown goods (honey, pickles, meat-pies, wine, fruits). For the wine lovers I recommend to visit any wine cellar in the city or the surroundings to taste delicious wine. Especially for those who love semi-sweet to sweet taste.

Almost all city walls along the edge of the historic centre remained preserved, the masonry in its original shape consists of more than 10 towers and strongholds. A part of this city wall starts from Jezuitské náměstí amplification belt via ulici Dvořák to náměstí Svobody towards former Horním předměstí (upper city suburb). From this romantic balcony-angle of the main castle defensive belt one can admire the deep Gránice valley, here stood the massive cylindrical tower and other massive artillery strongholds, hence one can descend towards the trough of the Castle to the streets in the modern part of the city.

Znojmo would have to be one of the finest places in the Czech Republic to visit and stay a while. It's got everything !
The people are fantastic and very welcoming to non Czech speaking Australian tourists .

Znojmo is a bit of an underappreciated gem in the Czech republic, easily accessible from Vienna but apparently largely overlooked by guide books that direct you to places like Český Krumlov and Kutná Hora alongside the other tourist hordes instead. It's a beautiful city, and the city walls are a great way to see it, providing a great route around the outside of the historic old town.

Walking around the city walls one feels what protection means. The medieval city wanted to defend its inhabitants and their values, the history teaches us that sometimes this politics was successful, but not always. These days one can think over whether his or her inner forces are powerful enough to resist any aggression, invasion, attack (microbes included) or any temptation.

I walked the city walls with a very good Czech friend who told me some interesting bits of history of the places as we walked by. Having my Czech friend as my local tourist guide was a wonderful help and greatly enhanced my tour od the city walls. My memory of this walking tour was that of a very old place, full of local interesting bits of Moravian history. Everything that I had hoped it would be. I visited in Sept 2015.
