Don't go for the tour; the castle's interiour is quite bare, you can't take photos, and the guide locks all rooms you've already been to, so you can't go to check anything out again if you feel like it.
The best feature of the castle is its complex - nice to walk around, affords lovely views for photos.

Znojmo is a beautiful town and everyone who lives there can be considered lucky. When you walk up to the castle, you get the feeling that they could have done a bit more. There is a brewery next door which looks very run-down and the gates to the actual castle were closed when we got there on a saturday afternoon. So we had a nice view over the town and the river from the walls but other than the walls, there was nothing up there. The history of the castle is impressive but it could be made a little more friendly. It is somewhat what I expected though.

The castle is nice, if you reach it you will, first of all, get to the best spot of Znojmo with the most beautiful scenery possible. In front of the castle there is this exceptional Rotund of St.Catherine with curious and long history and some exceptional frescues inside. Then there is this small bridge that leads to the castle itself. On the right you will find a staircase going down, where you can take a look at several beautiful hawks (guess, they belong to the castle and are trained and used for hunting).
When you cross the bridge, you reach the castle. Let's be honest, it is not the biggest or the most impressive castle in Moravia. But it has long history and used to be very important spot and recreation stop.
If you take an excursion inside, they will show you its interior and rooms and tell the story of the castle. There is a very nice exposition of old furniture (from Renaissance up to fin-de-sicle). The excursion is, though, quite fast (could be slower pace, I didn't manage to take a look at everything). After it you are offered to watch a short documentary about the Rotund (it's voluntary though). It is a pity they don't take you to see the castle yards, seems to be pretty cool.
But, again, it is a royal castle of one of the most important cities in Czech history (and in history of Central Europe too), so, why not to visit it :)

It is a lovely medeval castle but the fact is that if you already have seen some, you have also seen this one. But while visiting Znojmo, it is definetly a must to go and see this one. And there is nice view down to the river from the yard.

It's a great place to visit , so much history and the views are spectacular from the outside. On the inside tours you cannot take photos. Didn't bother us . It's really a shame how it had been neglected and left to rot and over the many years prior.
I hope one day that they can bring it back to its former glory.

In the city of Znojmo there was originally a castle, now a chateau. It includes the rotunda of St. Catherine - proof that the church was a co-ruler.

Perfect stopover when visiting Southern Moravia. The views from castle are impressive. Both main view directions to Dyje river valley with the dam and city with St. Nicolas Church and St. Wenceslas Chapel. Rotunda in inner yard as well. And if you take hot coffee in small buffet right beside it, you can enjoy all of this even in colder days as we did. Nice visitor center with restrooms, availability of parking just steps away. Worth to visit.

Castle itself is not the most beautiful in surrounding, however has lot of things to offer. There are furnished room, concert hall, gallery and very nice view of Znojmo. Moreover on guided tour there were only two of us, so it was private. Unfortunately rotunda was not opened due to high humidity inside. At least we see small model of rotunda inside the castle.

This isn't the most interesting castle feature I've seen in these parts. The view however is spectacular, giving sight of the church, town, river, dam and bridges.

What is the cost to visit the castle?
What are the hours of operation - we will be visiting on September 30, 2016 - a group of 2 adults and 2 seniors.
Also, is the Rotunda open to tour the inside? What is the cost and hours.
We want to stay in a home not a hotel with local folks...could you send a list of which would provide accomodations - we will need 4 twin or 2 twin and a double.

Is the Rotunda open now? Read where it was closed and you were unable to visit inside.
What is the cost?
Written August 23, 2016
The rotunda is open, but the problem is in humidity. This church is one of the oldest buildings in the whole Central Europe. It is very special to Czech nation because it has first and only pictures of roayal family Přemyslid (Přemysl). So they permit only 10 people in one turn and only if the humidity is low ater that they allows you to enter. The best is to call +420 515 222 311 in the morning to ask if the rotunda is open that day if not don´t get sad and visit the castle insted which is next door they have a very nice movie about rotunda with more detailes.
