- Martin CCardiff, United Kingdom83 contributionsSpice is nice...as a couple we'll be taking more Ginger and Nutmeg from now on.Our guide was very good, informative and friendly. Learnt a lot about spices and lots of tastes of "fresh" spices, unlike the dried varieties at home. Biggest surprise was how different coconut "juice" and " flesh" is when straight from a tree. Much better. All we met were friendly and fun. The downside, as others have noted, is being reminded to tip....but this is common...sadly. Generally a good fun experience, just that the tipping took the edge off it.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 3, 2023
- Frank KWindhoek, Namibia2 contributionsSpices etcVery interesting and very entertaining, due mainly to our hilarious (without trying to force it) and knowledgeable guide, Suheel. For us, he made it all worth it. Albeit a bit "touristy " (with some rough edges), it is an own community upliftment project (not a "farm" in the commercial sense) and therefore a worthy cause that I have no problem supporting. Thank you Suheel. We wish you the best with your studies.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 27, 2024

Sohail, our guide was very funny knowledgable and engaging, and the other staff entertaining and super friendly. Delicious fruit tasting was unexpected bonus. Great to see where our frequently used spices originate, and a very worthy community project. Teens enjoyed too!Visited July 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 31, 2024

We are more than happy with our visit to Jambo Spice Farm. The guide gave us so much information and demonstrations about the different spices and fruits (which we also tasted). Another guy (Ali Baba) made us jewels and crowns from leaves and flowers. Everything was chill and fun, people are fantastic!
You could buy some stuff (tea, coffee, spices, soaps) for presents.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The tour was about an hour, we saw a selection spices and learnt about them a little. Lots of fruit around too. There were some gimmicky moments along the way (watch a man part way climb up a coconut tree).
A downside is that this is a tip farm. At the end of each experience there's several people to tip.
Which slightly dampened the experience.
You will be led and funnelled towards stalls to buy bits and bobs.
There is a fruit tasting section, which to be fair filled us up completely.
We'd recommend going for a light education in spices.
Lather yourself in insect repellant before you go, the humidity amongst the trees breeds some very hungry mosquitoes.

We did the spice tour as a recommendation but we were highly disappointed. It’s a tourist trap. They ask you for tips in every station, and then also kind of force you to buy their products. It’s good to support them, I agree, but It’s expensive for what they offer. We bought things in all the stops but at the spices one, when we said we’d only get one product (high price for the size of the pack) they guy was a bit upset. Also our guide asked us for a tip of a fixed amount, and it was not low for the quality of the tour. We literally spent all the cash inside and couldn’t give that much. It didn’t look nice to ask that way, specially when the tour was much shorter than advertised. Finally you end up paying a ridiculous amount. I’m sorry, but this is not worth the money. I prefer to buy stuff without being forced and support genuine local people.

Very very touristy, there were like 20 tourist vans, dropping off people here, then you get a tour guide, and he has an assistant tour guide and some other guys and they all want a tip at various parts of the tour. You can see all kinds of stuff they grow here, including vanilla and coffee, beans, and various fruit trees. Very informative description of what they’re used for like perfume and medicine. Then more really really tourist stuff when the guy climbs a tree and chance some stuff just to get the coconut which you can drink.
So if you enjoy being with herds of tourist and being treated like the tourist masses, it is kind of fun place

We visited the Jambo spice farm.
The staff is very friendly.
We visited the spice beautiful plantation with an English speaking guide, who had high level of knowledge, regarding spice cultures. This was a very interesting visit, allowing us to see:
- the star of the spices in Zanzibar: the cloves
- other spices, e.g.: nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, various species of pepper, ginger, cumin…
During the visit, we could smell the leaves, the fruits and/or the roots of these spices!
Moreover, the guide explained us the culinary and medicinal properties of these spices.
A must in Zanzibar island, that is famous all over the word for spices!!!

This is one of many many spice farms, and we had a nice guide who showed us everything that we needed to know. The lunch was great and then you were able to shop spices, we bought two bags of tea, haven't tried it yet. You are expected to tip because, except for the guide, there are people making stuff for you with leaves, such as crowns and "jewelry." It was I nice experience, but you felt a lot like a tourist just being shuffled around, not authentic.

Highly recommend this activity for anyone in the area. We got to smell and taste lots of different spices and learn more about how they're grown and harvested. Our guide was very informative and we loved the woven hats etc they gifted to us. The fresh coconut was lovely and the fresh fruit lunch was a real highlight. Everything tasted so delicious!

The farm itself was great, lots of spices and things to see.
I had a cooking class as well which was perfect.
Staff are very friendly.
The only annoying thing is that every 20min they imply that this is the last time we will see x person so that we give a tip. Although i don't mind tipping at all, tipping 6 times in 2h becomes annoying

We had an excellent experience at Jambo Spice Farm. My daughters consider it a highlight of our trip and we did a lot of cool stuff. Momo was our tour guide and he was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. It was fascinating to see, taste, smell and learn about the origins of so many spices. I highly recommend the lunch. We ate a lot of good food on the trip and this was probably the best meal we had. Another reviewer commented that there was pressure to tip. That was not our experience.

Can we just come in a taxi and get a tour? What are the costs of the tour?
Written April 29, 2019
I would imagine taxi drivers can arrange it, we used a "private car for hire" which you see everywhere on Zanzibar and are well marked- i think we paid 60 or 80 usd pp, for spice farm with lunch and then stonetown- whatever it was, it was much less expensive than the several hundred usd our hotel quoted us
