Imagine this: you're picked up from your hotel by private taxi and taken to the edge of the mangrove forest of the Jozani Forest Chwaka Bay National Park in Zanzibar. There you transfer to an ox drawn cart decorated with palm leaves. You're then taken to a pavilion where the Sagando ensemble is performing traditional dances and music. You're gently coaxed into joining them and spend the next 20 minutes or so grooving and working up an appetite. Then Sarah, your host, invites you to follow her on the boardwalk into the forest. The boardwalk is lined with hundreds of candles. As you walk along you begin to hear the gentle sounds of a fusion of jazz and traditional Zanzibar music performed by Chem Chem led by Zanzibar's drumming icon, Mzee Kheri. Sarah then takes you to a platform to the side of the boardwalk where a veritable feast of Swahili cuisine is awaiting you, plus a bottle of bubbly. You're invited to sit down while the local medicine man performs a ritual wishing you a long and happy life. The dinner is delicious, the company great, the music mellow and beautiful. Every now and then, I pinch myself. It's not a dream. This was my 60th birthday party in Zanzibar, organised by Sarah/Marimba Cultural Tours. If you want a magical experience that is unique and will stay with you forever, then Sarah and Marimba can organise it for you.

We had some amazing experiences organised by Sarah. Correspondence prior to leaving for Zanzibar was a breeze, Sarah always responded quickly and thoroughly answering all my questions however trivial. I felt I had made a friend by the time my son and I met her. The guides are professional and trustworthy as well as knowledgeable and friendly. You really get value for your money and a personal experience. My 12 yr old was introduced to local singing and dancing and loved every minute of each trip we did including a visit to Prison Island, Pete Village and Jozani Forest and a traditionally cooked meal - nothing disappointed us.

I cannot praise Sarah and her staff at Marimba Cultural Tours enough for the experience they have given us. Right from the moment we arrived, we felt welcome and nothing was too much to help us enjoy the beauty and delights of Zanzibar. We came to Zanzibar for the Sauti za Busara music festival, which was fantastic, but the activities organised by Marimba topped the music! The guided city walk through Stone Town was highly enjoyable, very informative and opened our eyes to many different influences that have made the island what it is today. Sarah's knowledge of Zanzibar and its rich history is unrivalled. The spice tour was also delightful and taught us much about the spices we use in our cooking. The village and school visit were also a joy and a real eye opener. Again the degree of detail in the information given to us was amazing. The Swahili lunch was delicious and plentiful. Our son also really enjoyed the visit to the Jozani Forest and the mangrove and let's not forget the butterfly centre. The drumming class with the charismatic Mzee Kheri was unforgettable. Marimba's driver, Najim, was great, also offering his knowledge of Zanzibar and was always punctual and helpful. While many visitors come to Zanzibar for the beautiful beaches and beach-based activities, I would highly recommend engaging Marimba Cultural Tours to learn about the other side(s) of this magical place.

What a privilege. So accommodating, friendly and professional. The spice tour was beautiful and informative - Sarah is incredibly knowledgeable. Good, too, for our 7 yr to know where so many of our commonly used products come from. The Stone Town tour blew our minds. We were also taken to a cave that has been used for 5,000 yrs (no other tour operators do this). The village visit was unforgettable and very well Done - music, colour and an Ox ride. To top it all off, the most interesting talk from a medicine man. Amazing food at the house of local lady. Thanks to Najim our amazing driver. We really appreciate you picking up our misplaced items...🙂
