About
Not far from the Botanical Garden of Pamplemousse, a bougainvillea and coconut trees alley, a pond lined with lush nature ... in this stunning tropical setting stands the massive renovated sugar mill which is one of the most spectacular attraction of the island! The tour begins with sound of the jungle and of the waves of the ocean in the huge factory, with its gigantic machinery decked with a thousand lights : giant screens, movies, a barge floating and the sudden whistle of a railway engine. Experience an interactive and entertaining journey into the heart of Mauritius : its history closely linked to sugarcane, the secrets of sugar processing and the famous co-products of sugarcane (rum, electricity , natural fertilizers ...). Guided tour (Rs300/pers - recommended as from 15years old) at 10:30am and 2:00pm from Monday to Thursday and 2:00pm on Friday. - ABNottingham, United Kingdom113 contributionsVery informative museum about sugarFantastic museum where you can learn a lot about the history of sugar and its impact on the culture and history of Mauritius as well as how sugar is made. Very well presented and informative. At the end you can taste (and buy!) rum, sugar and jam. It takes 1 to 2 hours to get around the museum and was good value.Hello, Thank you for sharing your experience while visiting the sugar museum in Mauritius and learning about the history and its sugar development. - Katie W3 contributionsInformative and fun! While at L’aventura de sucre, my husband and I took a guided tour led by Devina. We both agreed she was the most informative guide we’ve ever had on a museum tour. Devina knew everything about Mauritian history and the sugar making process. She was also fun to talk to and moved us seamlessly through all the exhibits. We highly recommend taking the guided tour to make the most out of your visit and really learn about sugar!Greetings from l'Aventure du Sucre! Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us, particularly about the guided tour led by Devina. We are thrilled to hear that you found her to be the most informative guide you have ever had on a museum tour. Devina's extensive knowledge of Mauritian history and the sugar-making process is truly commendable. We are pleased that her expertise enhanced your visit, and we appreciate your recommendation to take a guided tour for a more enriching experience. It is wonderful to know that Devina's approach made the tour not only educational but also enjoyable. - Wendie S7 contributionsInteresting history of Mauritius and Explaination of Sugar ProductionReally great place to visit interesting history of Mauritius and loads of details about making sugar . Mostly indoors . Lots of impressive machinery and really well explained processes . Restaurant is also great and the shop/tasting area is beautifully done. No high pressure selling. Many hotels can give you vouchers for free entry if you ask .Greetings from l'Aventure du Sucre! We are delighted that you found the information about Mauritius and sugar production interesting! Mauritius does indeed have a fascinating history, and its sugar industry has played a significant role in shaping the island's economy. It is great to know that the experience is not only educational but also enjoyable, with well-explained processes, impressive machinery. We note also your appreciation of both the restaurant and the beautifully designed tasting area. The absence of high-pressure selling adds to the overall positive experience. - superj1978Portland, Australia245 contributionsGood history and showcase of old machineryNice historical photo information on the background etc of sugarcane and its progress to now. Nice photograph timeline, we didn’t do the audio tour. Liked the way they showcase the old processing machinery. Like that there’s options for kids too, to keep them engaged. Nice tastings at end (inc rum, which we don’t do), and a gift shop too. Appreciated the sporadic oscillating fans on a hot day.Good morning, We are pleased to know that you appreciated the museum tour, particularly the history content and the showcase of old machinery. It is great to hear that the options for kids were engaging and that the consideration of comfort with sporadic oscillating fans made a positive impact on your visit, especially on a hot day. Even though you did not partake in the rum tasting, we hope you found the other tastings enjoyable, and we are glad there was a variety of options. - Phoque-2Quebec, Canada2 contributionsRainy day rhumInteresting place to visit on a rainy day. Lots of information on the history of Mauritius and sugar. We did not take the interactive guide but chose to read instead - it was a lot but informative! Rhum and sugar tasting were included in the entry price. We enjoyed meeting Neil, who served us at the rhum tasting our first time there (we went back later during our trip to get the rhum and had the pleasure of chatting to him again with less people around than on the rainy day). He knew what he was talking about and took time with us to answer our questions on the rhum and the country.Greetings from l'Aventure du Sucre! We are delighted that you had a wonderful experience exploring our site on a rainy day. The combination of history, information on sugar, and interactive elements like rum and sugar tasting adds a unique touch to the visit. Meeting Neil and having the chance to chat with him not only enhanced your experience but also provided valuable insights into the local culture, especially regarding rum and the country itself. - Richard P23 contributionsWell worth visitingVery interesting, the preserved buildings and very detailed exhibits brought sugar production, the related history of Mauritius and products made from sugar cane to life. As well as this, it has a good shop and a lovely restaurant: Anna, the boutique manager was excellent, very helpful and knowledgeable without being pushy. We finished with an unplanned (and delicious) lunch. Well worth a visit.Greetings from Sugarworld! Thank you for your positive review! We tasted raw sugar cane and sugar cane juice and made a Mauritian cocktail with Kevin who told us all the steps. Afterwards we visited the big museum (separate tickets), also nice for kids! At the end of the museum you can join a tasting of various local products, such as different types of sugar, honey and rum. Neil made our rum tasting a fun experience. the museum in general is okay.. but i want to warn you about the shop - you have the opportunity to test rum after the visit of the museum - as we really liked it we bought 2 bottles. later that day we went to a local supermarket and the same rum was sold there for less than half the price we payed!!
so DO NOT BUY AT THE MUSEUM STORE!

Dear sir,
We are glad that your visit at l’Aventure du Sucre and the rum tasting experience at the shop was enjoyable, however we feel terribly sorry for the mishap which obviously occurred when you purchased our products.
There was indeed an error on that day regarding one particular packaging of rum liquors which usually includes nicely hand painted shot glasses. We were just receiving a new delivery of these shot glasses and the packaging employee in charge simply missed out on adding these to the packaging. We retrieved the products from shells as soon as we noticed the mistake later on the same day. We sincerely apologize for that unfortunate incident and would be more than happy to send you the missing glasses. May we please ask you to send us your private e-mail address so that we can communicate on the way forward?
Thanks in advance for your understanding, and once again apologies. We will be looking forward to welcoming you to l’Aventure du Sucre again soon. Kind regards.

I will start with the positive, great journey through the history of sugar on the island and general history, very informative. Lovely setting and has a shopping mall very close by. Nice shop to visit at the end of the tour and you can grab a drink or food in the restaurant.
It cost a family of 4 2200 MUR to enter which is not that unreasonable, but, be prepared to melt inside as there is no air conditioning. A few fans located around the venue does not count, although did provide some relief to the heat. I was really looking forward to tasting some of the sugar, vanilla, and rum. But, here is the problem. How can you provide a tour and not allow guests to taste the sugar cane, or the sugar cane juice? There are masses of fields with them everywhere but you do not provide samples, or even to buy? Ridiculous. Yes you can taste rum, but in microscopic portions. Same for the honey and vanilla. For what you pay, I expected more.
I would not really recommend to visit, unless you are already in the area, have a spare 90mins, and it is raining heavily outside. Go see the temples, markets, waterfalls instead. I wish i did.

Greetings from Sugarworld,
We appreciate your feedback following your recent visit and are pleased to acknowledge the positive aspects you highlighted. Regarding the issue of heat within the museum, we understand that it can be uncomfortable. However, it is part of our sustainable commitment to refrain from air conditioning the expansive 5,000 sq.m2 site for ecological reasons. Instead, we have implemented measures such as fans to mitigate the discomfort.
Regarding your desire for tasting sugarcane juice or samples, as part of TERRA, we are privileged to hold on a small plot of their cane fields a cane cutting activity on Wednesday morning where the visitor can taste the sugar cane and its juice. However, the Mauritian law does not allow for selling sugar cane and its juice as such. You are most welcome for this activity if the opportunity arises.
We also take note of your disappointment with the tasting experience of our local products. Despite this, we offer a diverse selection of around thirty local products, including 11 special unrefined sugars, exotic honeys, and fifteen 5-star rums, which have received international acclaim. While we understand your concerns about the serving size of rum, our hosts and hostesses are happy to adjust according to your preferences. Regarding your comments on the portions of honeys and vanilla, please note that the tasting of these products is self-service, and we offer them in abundance for our visitors' enjoyment. We hope to have the opportunity to welcoming you back to Sugarworld, perhaps for a guided tour, to provide you with a more fulfilling experience and change your perception of our cultural site and its offerings.
Warm regards from our team

This former sugar factory/Museum is one of the stops we had during our day tour of the noth part of Mauritius. The museum is very well presented. Very informative, not just about the sugar industry in Mauritius but on the overall history of Mautitius (of which sugar industry is a big part of), and which we are very interested in after being in this beautiful island. Clearly, a lot of efforts and resources were spent to establish this museum. Staff were nice. We are particularly impressed by the kindness, patience, and professionalism of Ms. Yashna, who assisted us for the rum tasting. Despite many people doing the tasting, she served everyone with smile and patience. We like the rum and we bought several bottles to bring back to Europe, thanks to Yashna effort introducing us to this brand of rum.

I’m not a rum drinker, but even so there’s lots to see and taste here. I would recommend a guided tour. We had Glenda for our tour who was charming and very knowledgeable. The tour lasts about 60-90 minutes. If you take yourself around, I’m pretty sure you’ll miss a lot. Wonderful to hear how so many cultures live in harmony. A lesson for many Countries there. It’s only 125MR extra for a guided tour. Really worth it.
Take a drink as it’s very hot inside the museum. There’s honey, jam, sugar and rum tasting. My wife sampled lots of rum (small measures) and there’s no pressure to buy. The 50 year old “best in the world” is over 6000MR…but lots of people were buying it. The other rums are reasonably priced. The lady serving the rum was lovely and fluent in 5 languages seamlessly switching from one to another. Very impressive. The different sugars are also very interesting to taste.
All in all a fascinating afternoon and well worth the visit. Do email to book your places on the tour to avoid disappointment. You’ll get a confirmation back at the start of business.

I had fond memories of my first visit at l'Aventure du Sucre as a teenager in 2005. On my most recent visit I found that it has perhaps become too detailed, with too many exhibits and artefacts. I guess it is meant more for visiting tourists wanting to know a lot about the sugar industry and its history in Mauritius.
The guided tours could do with the use of technology such as audio guides and headphones. The reason why I am saying this is that the guides tend to speak very loudly, which is a disturbance for visitors who are not part of those guided tours while they are visiting the mill. Generally speaking the employees tend to talk too loud and do not seem aware that this may not be well received by all visitors.
The restaurant's prices are beyond what Mauritians can afford and despite being branded as a restaurant and tea salon it did not sell the kind of items you would expect for tea time. The shop did not have the one variety of sugar I wanted to purchase.

Greetings from l'Aventure du Sucre,
We acknowledge your comments on your visit experience.
The museum content has been designed by a professional museologue to cater for large variety of visitors, i.e tourists, families, students, university students, teachers, scientists, researchers, engineers, journalists etc. All pedagogical contents (texts, toasters, albums, films and videos) are according to visitors' interest.
The guiding services are provided by both our staff and Tour operators' guides with a head set microphone as per number of visitors. The guiding services is a dedicated service as per client's demand. However, there is also an audio guide application which is free and available and very popular among our visitors.
We note your comments on the restaurant, our prices are highly comparative as other local restaurants and we regret that you did not take advantage of our home made pastries and desserts selection with tea. Quick sandwiches, salads and burgers are also available.
With regards to varieties of sugars, we are surprised that one variety was not available as we constantly make sure that all eleven sugar varieties are available in different packagings.
Thanking you for your visit and sharing,
Best regards

The ticket costs 500MUR-odd but it comes with a complimentary rum tasting. It takes atleast 90 min for you to cover the entire area and it was worth it. The entire sugar factory has been repurposed as a sort of museum + shop and it was done very well. It is an indoor attraction and so weather has little impact on your experience.

Hello,
Thanks a lot for your very nice comment. Much appreciated!
Indeed the entrance ticket gives access to the tasting of a large range of aromatic high end rums and also to the amazing range of Mauritian special unrefined sugars, as well as artisanal delighted tropical jams and exotic honeys.
Kind regards.

We were the first tourists to visit on the second day after lockdown, and the staff were clearly pleased to see us.
The museum was well laid out and easy to follow, which made the experience very interesting. After the museum visit we had a tasting session, which included various types of sugar, honey and rum. At no point did we feel that we were being pressurised to buy anything.
The museum is well worth a visit, and can be easily combined with the Botanical Gardens and Port Louis in a single day.
Thank you to both Darshinee for the sugar and honey tasting and Ljashna for the Rum tasting

Our favourite part was definitely the guided tour with Davina, followed by lunch in the restaurant. Davina was amazing, so knowledgeable & proud of her heritage. It meant that our visit, was not only about the history of sugar, but taught us about the history of Mauritius. Throughly recommend a visit here, with a guided tour, followed by a delicious lunch in the restaurant, you cannot leave without trying the chocolate fondant 😋

Very informative and pleasant visit where we learnt about the importance of sugar cane for Mauritius history. We took the guided tour with Glenda, in French, we found the guided tour the best way to do the visit. The audioguide is also well done. We spent very pleasant 2 hours, including the sugar and rum tasting, and a visit to the shop. We would recommend the restaurant only for dessert, the mains were not special.
As the museum is rich in stops and information, we would recommend more sitting options so that one can stay longer, rest and have a in-depth visit

Having visited many museums around the world I have to admit that this was one of the best I have been to. The phone app provides a commentary and the museum is well laid out with detailed explanations of how the island was formed, it's history and the importance of sugar cane to the economy. We spent 2 hours although could have benefited from another hour. I would strongly recommend a visit here to those who want to know more about the island. We enjoyed sampling various sugars and rums at the end of our visit and agreed our morning had been very well spent.

It is needed a booking in advance(before coming) for the guided tour? Or we can simply buy tickets on the spot and wait for the guided tour session?
Written January 29, 2023
You can buy tickets when you get there, and it’s self guided, you just wander around reading the signs.

The bus doesn't go directly to the entrance. You'd need to take a bus to the Pamplemousses roundabout and walk to it from there. That would take no more than 10 minutes.

Does the hotel arrange transfers from airport to hotel? And if so, what do they cost?
