This church is dedicated to Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. They took the alphabet theme very seriously... you'll find the alphabet on the front doors, in the gravel on the ground next to the church, on the walls inside, on the way to Mashtots' tomb, in the alphabet park behind the church, and more. The church is pretty, and its charm is really in the commitment to displaying the alphabet in as many places and media as possible.
The alphabet park behind the church is awesome. The letters are beautifully carved.
You can also visit Mashtots' tomb underneath the altar. The church is definitely worth a visit! It would be pretty no matter what, but the Mashtots element makes it even better.

The main reason to visit Oshakan, is because of the tomb of Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet. After his death in 444 a small chapel was built on his tombstone. The church was built between 1875 and 1879.The entrance to the church was decorated with 36 khachkars (cross-stones), depicting the 36 original letters of the Armenian alphabet created by Saint Mesrop.

This is an amazing place to visit. One of the unique and very spiritual places. Located not far from Yerevan, it is a hidden gem. Don`t hesitate to visit the place.
Here you can find also very nice letter park, where all Armenian alphabet letter statues are located.

We visited this cathedral when we crossed Oshakan to go towards the Mount Aragats (the highest peak in Armenia today).
Oshakan is a village rather sleepy, but this church (which overlooks a small square along the highway H19) drew our attention by a huge statue on the right side of the facade.
The statue is that of Mesrop Mashtots, the monk and scientist who in the first half of the fourth century CE invented the alphabet still used, thus giving a powerful contribution to the Armenian culture.
The church houses the tomb of Mesrop, although it is modern (1875).
To commemorate this illustrious person, in addition to the statue you can observe, in the garden outside the church, many small hedges, each of them reproduces a letter of the Armenian alphabet; also you can remark many clay pillars, which, evoking the forms of "khatchkar" (the traditional Armenian crosses carved in stone): they also reproduce the letters of the alphabet.
If you cross even quickly Oshakan, this site is worth a stop; as a stop is advised at the small canyon formed by the Kasakh river and crossed by H19 highway just south of the church, with its picturesque bridge dating at the beginning of the eighteenth century.

About 30 km from Yerevan, this is the church where the creator of the Armenian alphabet is buried. The church building itself is about 150 years old but the cell where St. Mesrop is buried is 1500 years old. It's a humbling experience and worth a detour.
