Nice little, green peninsula, a little south of Himara. A narrow strip of land connects it to the Albanian Riviera, with a small but indifferent beach. What stands out on the peninsula is the very beautiful Castle of Porto Palermo.

This great, small castle in the Albanian riviera is heaven! It is a gift of Ali Pasha to his unique love...Vasiliki...so romantic! The castle has an attractive view of the sea almost 360o. Climbing the hill to reach the entrance you can feel the peace of the place and taste the beauty of the nature around you...and after you enter the caste and reach the terrace a wonderful view is offered in front of you! A gift of love always radiates beauty!
You can reach it easily from the city of Himara. Outside the castle is a small port and a church ( St. Nikolaos I think). A trip in the Albanian riviera must include this castle!

Porto Palermo is not a town - it is "just" an uninhabitated ancient place. There's an old fortress (where you can cool down on a hot day; entrance is 100 lekke per person) and it is a great place for swimming. Don't forget your snorkeling equipment! Diving under the old pier is super fun. You can also climb up using ropes and tires that hang from the pier and jump to the water. There's a camping site nearby (eko camping) and a decent restaurant.

Very interesting and well maintained fortress. Stopped here on sailingboat. Reports of military sending boats away but we had no trouble. Fortress closes in afternoon but reopens at 4.shaded bar across the road, friendly staff and freshly caught fish. Lovely spot for swimmimg too.

We stopped in Palermos to visit another of Ali Pasha’s fortresses, this one much smaller and decidedly less fearsome than Gjirokastra. The path from the road is easy enough to access with a little scrub-bashing for good measure. The grounds are wild but tidy and the caretaker greeted us warmly. We were able to explore every nook and cranny, and in hindsight, wished we had brought a torch to access some very dark passages and rooms. The “dungeons”, though long since cleaned out, are dark and gloomy reminders of life in those brutal times. We ate a very pleasant meal afterwards at the hillside restaurant admiring wonderful views over the sparkling waters of the Adriatic with the little triangular fortress and St Nicolo’s Church below.

I've been to this castle several times, and each experience is great. This place is out of the way, has few tourists, and in very good condition. If you are going on your way to Saranda, it is a must to see.
Just south of Himare (where you can get food and ice cream), you'll turn toward the castle in the peninsula. Tickets are a 100 leke a person (about 1 dollar), and following this the man will just give you the key to the castle. Like, literally, you will have the keys to the castle. A short hike up to the castle, and its yours to explore!
The inside is a lot of fun to check out, you can go upstairs and look off the roof, and you can explore wherever you want. If you go out the "back", there is a little courtyard with a small metal gate in the corner. If you want, you can go through the gate and hike through the bushes to the ocean down there. The water is gorgeous, and not very cold from May onwards.
Great place, lots of fun to check out, a definite must if you are in southern Albania.

Nice little castle, atmospheric interior, and good views from the top.
Just nearby, if you look very carefully, you will see the entrance to the submarine pens that housed Hoxha's two submarines. This is still a military site, apparently, so don't even try to pay it a visit!

The castle is in a good condition, great architecture and amazing scenery.
It is a 5-6km walk from the city of Himare (on the national road), unless someone offers to give you a ride.
The area around the castle, as all over Albania, is kind of dirty, there were a few water bottles hidden in some of the castle walls too.

Prezzo...onesto.
