There are over 1800 'distritos' in Peru of which Huancas with a population of just over 1300 inhabitants is one of the smallest. It is located 8 km (5 miles) north of Chachapoyas. The main attraction are the viewpoints in the vicinity of the hamlet of which Mirador del Cañon de Huancas Sonche (1 km towards the east) is the most spectacular.

I walked up and down to Huancas from Chachapoyas along the dirt road. Alternatively there is a colectivo from near the mercado in Chachapoyas (5 Soles one way).

This is a small village about 6 km from Chachapoyas. Not much here to see, except the two canyons (I went to one), then caught a collective from the main part of town back to Chachas.

my girlfriend asked me if I fancied a walk.... lovely little village next to a massive cannon. the government have just built a fantastic stone walkway with view and picnic. bbq stops for about 1 mile of the track from town. a bus only 5 sol, I wouldn't pay for the tour, just simply as the locals where the buses run from for the cannon

A great visit to canon de sonche. Then we went into the small building there and a very nice lady with her kids made several pots and items in the traditional Chachapoya way. If you are into are, understanding how people lived centuries ago then you will find this very interesting. Spanish will help too!

Huancas offers one of the most amazing views in Peru - overlooking a huge valley and a number of gorges - with beautiful mountains, rivers and waterfalls to be seen.

I got a collectivo from the terminal in Chachapoyas for 1 dollar - the drive is about 6-7 km and quite interesting.

The town of Huancas is small and has a nice square with artesanal shops.

I walked the 6.5km back to Chachapoyas - with great views all round. You may also get to meet and chat to some of the locals.

You drop into Chachapoyas from above - which is pretty.

There was one shxtty dog that got a little too close with its barking but I pretended to throw stones and have eventually ran off!

The Huancas were forced to move here by the Incas from Huancayo (much further south) 500 years ago. The main attraction is the amazing view.
