Meh, expensive, crowded and dirty water - actually saw a used pad floating in the water. No free beach access - paid 30eu for umbrella and two chairs. Won’t be coming back.

We went here on a Sunday afternoon so it's not too surprising it was a zoo of people - very hard to find parking.
The beach itself is very nice, the buildings and restaurants in the area not so much. It's feeling a bit run down and dirty.

This small pier is made of concrete and local stone, so you get a quite imposing image, though it is short. Great for taking nice pictures, the views are fantastic.

Visiting Rome in the summer can be stressful, so we were very happy to have discovered this little gem. We woke up one morning and walked down the Pontile di Ostia, enjoying the sea and the locals.

We were all in need of a down day whilst in Rome. So decided on a trip to the beach. For €1.50 we travelled by train to Ostia Lido. The beach was a 10 minute walk from the train station. Although the resort was a bit tired and scruffy the beach was pleasant. We hired three sun beds and an umbrella for €35.
After 4 days of sightseeing around Rome this was a much needed rest.

We wanted to have a short break from crowds in Rome and chill out for a little while. A train from Piramide station (Porto San Paolo) took us in less than 30 mins to the centre and it took 10 mins to walk to the beach. Since it was October we did not expect lots of attractions and there was none but the beach was lovely and peaceful, the pier was perfect for a walk and across the street was a small cafeteria with the best ice cream we had in Rome (and we did try a lot of different places). I would imagine it is pretty busy in summer but it was lovely and quite in autumn.

We stayed here for 2 nights and were sorry that we did so. The sea front area has little charm and the whole place seemed run down. The restaurants were mostly fast food joints and we chose to eat at home. As the nearest beach to Rome we had expected better, we really wished we had stayed in Rome, our only reason for staying was to visit Ostia Antica. As you can travel there from Rome for 1.50E it would have been far better.

Ostia is a small town where the Italian live with the vacation spirit, even though everybody work daily, but their life seem to have more pleasure with the beach at the door, many gelateria and pizzeria, beachside caffe....People seems to be very friendly and relax. Iit's beautiful in the morning when the sun rises, and when the sun sets. It's beautiful when it's sunny or windy, whether it hot or cold. There are tiny neighborhood squares, the little boutique that entices you to stop and curious about.
I can walk or ride the bike along the beach, or in the Pineta (a Mediterranean Pine Wood), there is the small hamlet of fisherman, romantic looking, and cozy to visit. So it represents a beach vacation and yet you can visit all the historic sights of Rome with the local train 30 minutes away. This is ideal for people who takes his time and enjoy a slow pace instead of hopping around from city to city.
I just love Ostia.

Our 14-year-old wanted an up-close experience with the Mediterranean, so we took the train out to the beach at Ostia. It's a depressed area, reminiscent of Atlantic City - at least it felt that way in early April. We headed for the sandy beach and set up on a blanket, and took turns wading out, ankle-deep in the sea.
Unfortunately, this area is pretty dirty, and the sea breaks and piers probably don't allow the water to flow the way it would need to...which causes an elevated level of bacteria. Or at least, that was our assumption when, the next day, two of us ended up with raging rashes on our ankles.

Simple bridge, good views, not so much better than those you would have from the shore. Needs a little maintenance.
