Best viewpoint in the Colca Trail

Best place for watching condors in Peru. We've enjoyed the time here, watching the canyon and the condors flying so close to us

Condor Crossing but not Always with Condors
Apr 2021
The views of the canyon from here are breathtaking but the skies were overcast so we didn't see any condors. They like to glide over the thermals but with no sun, there were no thermals. You have to get lucky with the weather or wait it out and hope the sun comes out.

Great views.

I liked the view more from the Mirador del Cura that is nearby. This place is a little bit more for the masses with more opportunity to look in every direction , so it’s maybe better for a condor watching.

BIG birds
Aug 2019 • Couples
We had booked a trip with our travel agent so this condor trip was included. We were so lucky to see a few condors here at the Cross, but in fact, the stop and walk before was even more spectacular as they were flying above our heads.
I only wish we could have stayed longer, but our guide pushed us to keep walking.
The views are beautiful a well.

Spotting condors in a very deep canyon
Dec 2019 • Solo
Visited as a day tour from Arequipa in Dec 2019.

Most people visit from Arequipa as either 1 or 2 day tour. I opted for one day tour as the itinerary looked largely similar, with the 2 day more leisurely and you spend more time in Chivay (where you spend the night) and you can explore or trek if you want. One day tour is more tiring (depart Arequipa at 3am, return at 5pm) but it is an option for those with limited time.

Highlight of the tour is the canyon and spotting the condor. We reached the canyon at about 8.30am and had about 50 min to try to see the condor. Lots of people but plenty of spaces to walk away from the crowds and appreciate the amazingly huge and deep canyons. For me, even without spotting the condors, the journey doing the canyons was worth the trip.

We didn’t spot any condors until we almost took off. Someone spotted just near our car and we dashed out to see. It was just one condor. It is difficult to take any photo as it flew very high but you could see the large wingspans with white stripes underneath. I was happy enough to have spotted one.

As said, even without the condors, it is an amazing place to visit.

Condors with a view
Nov 2019
I would have enjoyed the visit even without condors. The weather was perfect and the views were awesome. But we were also lucky to see condors – young ones, mature ones, flying and sitting on rocks just below the viewing place. Naturally, there are crowds, because all the guides bring the groups for the most suitable time – between 8 and 9 a.m. But the area is large, so if the condors are there any spot will be good for sighting and making pics.

Majestic spot with majestic birds
Oct 2019
The Mirador Cruz del Condor is a very popular spot but if you walk a few hundred yard from the 'Cruz' the crowds will thin out and you will be able to experience some time watching the magnificent birds as the catch the thermals. We worth the effort - just be careful near the road where everyone seems to think they are F1 drivers.

The Colca Canyon was beautiful together with the Condors elegantly gliding in the sky -absolutely stunning . A must visit place if in the area . The surrounding sceneries were beautiful as well

Just stunning views of condors and the canyon.
Sep 2019 • Couples
Arrived early, about 8 before the crowds and stayed 2 hours, saw about 20 condors initially just sitting on rocks then we had fantastic views of them flying low over our heads and over the canyon before they soared off.
Overall, just stunning.

Everyone here for Condors
Jul 2019
There are two reasons whey tour groups arrive very early. One is that they are generally leaving the area in the afternoon and need to get away. The other, more important reason is the thermals in the canyon. As sun rises and the temperature increases there are more dynamic thermals and this suits the Condors. There will be a lot of tourists, all fighting for the best viewing spots. The main thing we noticed was how they never seem to flap their wings despite their large size. Hope you're lucky when you visit. We were given 80% probability and ended up having dozens of sightings, you can never tell. The previous week our guide said in 2 hours they had one sighting.
