This tower, along with the old cathedral, stand alone above the main town of San Severino. It’s an easy, short walk up a brick and stone path to the tower. Allow about 12 - 15 minutes.
The view from the top is worth the legwork and the 40 metre tower is striking.
Like the Tower of Pisa, it has a slight lean.
The history is a bit vague but it is generally thought to have been built in the 13th century.
It didn’t always stand alone. Originally it was one part of a larger medieval complex, a system of fortifications with a castle and palaces, although these no longer exist.
The massive height gave the townspeople an excellent view out over the countryside. Approaching enemies and would-be attackers could be seen before they got too close. Messages could be sent from the tower to other similar castle towers throughout the municipal area. Smoke and fire signals could be sent by day or night, allowing for quick communication if an enemy was spotted.
Apart from being terribly tall, there are not a lot of other prominent features in thee tower.
Two tiny doors with double pointed arches allow access to the tower (although it is not open for visitors). On the tall tower they look like elf doorways.
You can also spot two stone-carved bas-reliefs. They don’t look much more than two white squares around the middle of the tower but later we learnt that one is a lion, symbol of the Ghibellines (supporters of the Holy Roman Empire). San Severino sided with the Ghibellines in the painfully long struggle with the Guelph (supporters of the Papacy) during the 14th century. The other is a horse bit. It’s assumed that this belonged to the despotic lords, the Smeducci. It was a threat to show how rebels would be treated.
