4km from the Kandy-Colombo road. This rock temple is surrounded by paddy fields and secondary jungle. There are many caves but very few inscriptions. Former Buddhist hermitage. Temple surroundings are very cool even during a very hot day. Weekdays very few visit the temple. Excellent place to meditate. Very large rocks in the temple vicinity. Unlike other temples few paintings and images found in the viharaya. Ancient Rock inscriptions are present but not clear.Top of the hillock also have few caves and a new dagoba and a Botree.

One of the main attractions in Gampaha district. Dating back to 1st century BC the temple is one of the hiding places of King Valagambha of Anuradhapura when he was organizing the army to fight against south Indian invaders. The cave temple was redeveloped during 18th Century AD.
You can worship the temple and also climb the rock and see the surroundings. Climb is not very steep.
Better to go on Poya days. Lot of visitors are coming. plenty of parking space is available. Please wear appropriate clothing since the place is a Buddhist temple. You can have fun while maintaining the peaceful environment of the temple. Best time to visit is 02:30 to 05:30 pm.
Public transport is available only up to main road. After that you need to get three wheeler for hire. Lot of hiring vehicles are available nearby. Otherwise use a private vehicle.

Varana Rajamaha Viharaya is one of the oldest temple found in Sri Lanka. It is said that King Valagambha used to hide here while he was in exile. You can see temple and caves together which is a familiar sight where King Valagambha used to hide.
