Chivay is a nice quiet small town. The church was big but severely damaged by an earthquake and not yet repaired so interior was closed. Still a nice town and town square close to the canyon.

I cam here several times and each time there was the same feeling. Relaxed. Locals. A little bit of fun. Alpacas.
Yes there are women dressed in traditional costume with alpacas but if you want a photo, they'll expect around 2 soles as payment. And if you try and sneak a photo, they'll know and will get cranky at you.
The tuk tuks or whatever they call them here are in excellent condition and the owners just love to make theirs better than the next one.
Sometimes there are activities going on here and you should stay around and watch.
Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Good parking.

Our hotel, Casa Andina Standard Colca, was at a short walking distance from the Plaza de Armas. Beautiful views of the mountains, safe town and great restaurants.

The central square seems to contain most of what there is to see here. The square is just that - four walkways bounded by shops (travel companies, coffee bars, souvenirs), a cobbled/ flagged roadway and a central little park with walkways and grassed areas. The most striking things are the large statues at each side/ corner portraying condors, incas, local people etc. Little bit touristy/ tacky, but quite fun.

While only small there is history and beauty in the square. Surrounded by historic buildings and the church it has a fountain in the middle, mature trees and well tended gardens. There are shops and restaurants around.

I visited Chivay during their festival celebration - when the townspeople danced and played instruments outside for the duration of my stay. They were dancing and playing for more than 7 hours a day!!!! And this plaza was where the ornaments and main activities were (including cotton candy!) so I enjoyed this place.

Otherwise, there were a few cafe shops and restaurants (I figure this is the best place to get food). They also have a local market around the area. Visit the hot springs and try zip lining also!

This one caters more for locals than tourists so you may not find it as colonial as you expect. But do visit the church. Heard it caters for local festivals in Jan to Apr. At the time of our visit roads were being rebuilt.

When I was there, i could not get around the place because this place was under construction. It is small, but it seems to have its own charms
