We visited on a quiet Saturday afternoon at 14:00 and enjoyed an almost private tour with five children (4, 5, 9 and two times 11). This 90 minute tour was in German but there are also tours in English and there are listening posts on several locations in at least four or five different languages. The tour starts with an open train ride into the 500 year old silver mine. At one point in history more than 80 percent of all the silver in circulation came from this mine. Unique and interesting experience for children and adults.

The site itself is ok and the train into the abyss of the earth is fun, especially with children, but if you don't speak German then you better read about it all before getting there because they don't give a damn about tourists. Everything is solely in German, and the 3 stations where you can get some translated audio guidance from antiquated equipment are too few and too dull.

Visited the silver mine attraction with my wife and 14 year old daughter. The approach from the car park to the mine is a little untidy so first impressions could be improved by better landscaping and paths. The price also seemed a little high at 38 Euros for a family for around a one hour tour. Our young male guide was very friendly and amusing and spoke fluent English. The 8 minute ride by small train into the mine is fun although some people might find it a little scary as it goes quite fast and the tunnel wall is pretty close. The trip then consists of a walk around the mine interspersed with short film presentations. There are a number of tethered handsets at each film presentation point which provide translation of audio into English, Italian, French and Dutch (I think). These handsets are quite old fashioned and could do with being updated with more modern versions. Altogether the trip was enjoyable and informative, my daughter thought it was great (particularly the train ride) and I would recommend it.

If you are not speaking german, you have to go on tour in english. We were on tour in german language with provided app and it was quite bad. The app contains about 50% of information told by the guide. You have to bring your own earphones (small ones, because of helmet), otherwise you will not hear anything from phone. The app guide was understable, but full of mistakes in speech and also in facts (in Czech language at least). Know all this in before, we waited for english guided tour.
On the other hand, the train was amazing!

Very interesting activity - we had a rainy day and headed there. Long line but well organized. Very interesting tour, super impressive demonstration of the genius of the miners. Was fun!

'cause once you are committed, there's no way back. While what it is, is quite interesting, the arrangements leave a lot to be desired. It is definitely not for anyone with even the slightest tendency to claustrophobia, inability to walk on wet uneven ground, or up and down construction grade steps, There is no briefing given whatsoever of what you will encounter and preview of safety precautions. While nothing untoward happened on our trip, there so many risk factors that it is surprising they are allowed to operate at all.

After given a hard hat and a raincoat, you are taken to an open mine train that is one person wide with seats for 30 or so. One guide on the front, the passengers all in a row, then the engine with the driver. Train seats are not really seats, but a plank that runs front to back which you straddle. The tunnel the train runs into is only just a bit wider than the train, so reaching out with your arms to the sides or up along most of the path you can touch ragged rock edges. The tunnel is lighted with dim overhead lights spaced about every 100 feet or so. Going in, the train moves at about 15mph and that's the time to learn to keep your arms in and not to tip over. On the 1/2 mile trip in, there is dripping water, high noise from the train, and a pretty dark trip.

Once inside, it's by foot from cavern to cavern where talks given in German. In a few places, there are explanatory videos projected on rock wall with some hand sets that provide translations in other languages. The quality of the videos is not very good and projecting them on rough rock screens does is no help. There is a lot of water in the tunnels dripping from the overhead making the walking wet. Without hiking boots, it's not a very happy experience.

After the tour, it's back on the train and now on the way out they crank up the speed to make it a thrill ride. No choice but to hang on tight as the rough rock walls going by fast are pretty scary. A feeling of relief arrives when train emerges.

Group we were with was pretty multinational many of whom had little on no ability with German. The guides had moderate English capability, but were not particularly forthcoming unless asked a specific question. Our trip completed without mishaps, but could not help but think what might happen if something did go wrong with guides and passengers not being able to communicate. Mining and going into mines is inherently dangerous, susceptible to mechanical or electrical failures that even experienced miners have learned to take seriously. Bringing tourists into this kind of environment without preparation and safety provisions seems bordering on the side of wreckless.

First you part with a lot of cash then dress up in a long waterproof coat and builders helmet.

The ride on the train is bumpy, wet and unless you keep your head well down if you are anything over 5'8" there is a good chance you will crack it against the roof.

The guide only speaks in German (although she did say a little to us in English) but there are English and multi lingual speakers which you can try to listen to as she is speaking. The dummies in certain places aren't very good and really there is little atmosphere.

As you walk through the mine, again you are in danger of losing your hat or your scalp due to the low roof and precious little lighting other than her torch (and she is at the front!)

On the way back there are some very steep and deep steps both stone (well worn and sliding away from you) and wood. There were no signs or indications that this attraction would not be suitable for disabled, children or the elderly who had might have problems walking.

When you get back you cross the road get rid of your 'protective clothing' and then ushered into the gift shop. Doesn't contain much that most people would want.

Food and drinks and toilets at hotel next door.

Final tip if you are going to walk to the mine from Schwaz railway station ignore the tourist information personnel who said it was only 5 minutes walk. It wastn't - it was over 3 miles and mostly unsignposted.

The excursion starts with a train ride into the mine, which lasts over 6 minutes. Its a narrow shaft that a electric mine train rides at a safe speed but into a very tight tunnel. The walk around in the mine shows some parts of history as well interesting geology. There is an amazing water wheel in the cave. The whole trip takes a bit over an hour. You do get to wear a raincoat and helmet. The are a lot of water trips during the train ride, so don't wear your best clothing. I would visit this mine again. There is also a great gift shop on the premises and a local restaurant nearby.

My partner and I received a recommendation from a local person in Schwarz to visit the silver mine. As I am in third trimester of pregnancy it was important for us that it will not be a difficult tour. We arrived at around 11:15 and got tickets to the 12:00 clock tour. At the counter it was recommended to download an audio guide to our cell phone. It was a hustle but we did it. Also Before entering the tour every one received a helmet and a jacket against the high humidity (water tends to slightly drip from the walls inside the mine). Also take a warm shirt with you. It’s cold down there...we began with a 7 minuets ride down to the mine which was a lot of fun! The guid was fantastic and had excellent English so if your English is good enough there is no need to download the audio guid. The tour was so interesting and adventurous! It also combines some multimedia inside the mine - also in English. The tour ends with a train ride back to the starting point. I highly recommend this fun tour. There were many children with us who also seemed to enjoy it!
