Around 15kms drive from Top station to the nearest small time village Vattavada, you cross this beautiful stretch of Pambadum Shola national park. Tiger reserve basically known for deadly venomous snakes and wild animals. Advised to travel in groups and avoid travelling during late hours.

Pambadum Shola national park is approximately 35 km from Munnar. It is just a km ahead of Top station on the way to Vattavada, enroute to kodaikanal. There are many trek options in the forest and forest guide is also available at the check post. You can also book the overnight stay at Log huts and mud hut in the forest. The average altitude of forest is 1900 m and has the same climate as of Munnar.
I have visited the forest specifically for the trek. This trek is around 9 km long and starts from the check post. The fee is Rs. 200 per person which includes a bottle of water, packet of Parle G biscuit and services of forest guide. Don’t forget to carry your leech socks (forest is infested with leeches) or buy them from the forest department store at check post (Rs. 100 per pair of socks). The trek route goes along the old kodaikanal route (it is closed for vehicle and total covered by grass, shrubs, etc.) approximately for 4 km (ascent). Along the route you can see lots of Nilgiri Langur (black body with golden colour hair around face), Malabar squirrel and many varieties of butterflies, birds and reptiles. After 4 km you have a option to trek back the same route or go downhill approximately 1 km ( incline varies from 30° to 60°) inside the forest. The log huts and mud huts are also there on the same route. The descent ends on the tar road (kodaikanal route). From that point (tar road) you need to walk around 4 km (ascent) back to the check post). I really enjoyed the trek and recommend it if you like trekking in the forest.
Washroom and parking facility is available at checkpost.

Have been to this national park twice in August and in October. The experience was very good both time. The place is only one km down from Top Point, Munnar. Though local buses and shared taxi ply through the forest road, private cars are not allowed unless you have a reservation in the forest rest house. You do get an option for a 2-3 hour medium steep track in the forest. The entry fees and guide charges are very minimum. During rains you might encounter leeches so its better to purchase leech socks from the forest shop outside the entry gate. Water and parle buscuits are provided by the forest department if you opt for the track. Spotting black langur and malabar squirrel is quite easy if you opt for the track. Also came across elephant dung during the track.

We have Travelled in January it's very cold. Vattavada is famous in strawberry farm but there's no strawberry in January . Strawberry season is in August but awesome climate and good ambience stays are available But those who travel from kochi if they starts the trip in night and if they are not planning to stay there is toilet facilities in panchayath office . If you are travelling with family it's better to take room and make fresh and The roads from munnar town to pampadum shola check post was very bad from check it's nice road

Spent one night / two days at forest departments facility which is very meagre but dirt cheap. It's a good lace to freak out. Bisons roam freely there, as evidenced by the abundance of their dung in the vicinity. Watch out for leaches. We were a group of ten. Drove up there in two SUVs, prepared BBQ and had a blast. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Glaison, the guide, took us all around. Without him we would have been able to find the tea plantations, the tea factory, the chocolate factory, the small villages etc etc

VATTAVADA IN MUNNAR ( Shola forest )
Shola forest area located about 40 km east of Munnar is the serene village of Vattavada. At Vattavada, in comparison to other regions in Munnar, instead of tea plantations, it is the predominance of vegetables that occupy the terraced slopes and valleys of Vattavada. The scenic hilly tract of Vattavada is at an altitude of 3500 to 6500 feet above sea level, and is a refreshing experience, which is yet to come under the constant gaze and the footprints of visitors. The place receives plenty of sunshine and the winter temperatures never dip below unbearable levels. Besides the slopes of vegetable fields, one could also find forest patches, interspersed with eucalyptus and conifers. The area also teems with bird life and also other winged beauties like butterflies in various color, size and shape. Vattavada could be taken for a place significant for trekking. Here, an avid trekker would get options to explore many adjoining locations. Some of the trekking routes starting from Vattavada include the ones going to Kodaikanal, Top Station, Mattupetty, Kanthaloor and Meesapulimala. Most of these treks offer enough excitement in terms of negotiating the terrain as well as enjoying the floral and faunal wealth on its course. Visitors could also engage in activities like mountain jeep safari, mountain biking, jungle camping etc. offered by private operators in the region.

We had a guided tour through the forest. While the NP is very small, it's set in the large forest along the Tamil Nadu border and is traffic free. There is lots of wildlife but you need to visit early in the day or the evening to see the larger animals. We did see several Giant Malabar squirrels, Langurs and birds.
