Drove to the hydroelectric dam in early August 2024. When asked at the checkpoint how to get through, the man with the machine gun said "over there senior, make arrangements." Started at 500s, agreed at 300s for two. Next is a beautiful serpentine with views of the hydroelectric building and dam, brutal tunnel and exit to the crest. Scenic, spacious, unusual, the views are cool. Armed sentries salute everyone passing by just in case)) Behind the crest is a monument in the form of an early model of Belaz on a pedestal, followed by a small jetty. There's a dozen cars in the parking lot, but no one. Standing boats, offered skiing for 100s so-called small circle and 200s large circle. If you want to swim in the marina, you can swim there, but garbage floats in the water and boats do not hunt.

The Nurek Dam is the world highest dam, 300 m (984 ft) on Vakhsh River in Tajikistan.
The dam is located in a deep gorge along the Vakhsh River in western Tajikistan, about 75 km (47 mi) east of the nation's capital of Dushanbe. A town near the dam, also called Nurek, houses engineers and other workers employed at the dam's power plant.
Move by car about 70km to SE from Dushanbe till, after Nurek City, be stucked in parking place beside of military barrier. From this parking place you will be able to see giant fountain of water dropped from Dam to river.

Actually the trip was with my daughter and wife but TA does not have such a category! Why cant adult children be part of family? TA needs to rewrite their categories.
We were recommended this place. Our guide was excellent. He followed my instructions when we met the army officer in charge. He translated exactly as per my words. We gave the soldier respect and requested his permission to see the dam from the top. Generally not allowed. After the VIP visitors had left, which meant a wait of 20+ minutes, happily eating fresh grapes, we drove to the top of the second highest dam in the world at 300 metres. There are 9 generators of which 6 were operational. You get a bird eye view of Nurak town from far above.
The road is a dirt path at times but driveable. This is an opportunity you must not miss. The force of the water being expelled out of one of those huge drains needs to be seen to be believed.
The trip from Dushnabe to Nurek is not too long. Its a pleasant drive and one sees many new dachas en route. Its well worth the trip.

Stopping in Nurak/Норак on our way out of Dushanbe, it is largely an industrial town whose main focus is the Nurek Dam. It is an impressive dam at almost 1000 feet high which churns out power for the region at an insane level. You will have to show your travel documents if you want to go up on the top, the sentries are serious but not unreasonable and best to do what they ask. The view from the top is marvelous and it is worth the drive.

I have been there twice, most recently went with some other friends and stayed at Aqua Club on the lake formed by the Nurek Dam. It was a nice place to stay, price of 500somoni (about 50$) covered 24 hours on the lake... a room for sleeping (all rooms sleep 2 people) and all food (breakfast lunch and dinner) and transportation from bus station in Nurek to the dam and then a boat ride to the floating "house boat". Swimming was great, water amazing color and clear! highly recommend!

We spent the weekend at the Aqua club and enroute to the Aqua club, crossed over Nurek Dam. The soviet style, "papers please" checkpoints made me smile but was a necessity to get onto the dam.

For a memorable weekend trip, stay in a hotel on Nurek Lake above the dam. There are several options including some excellent floating hotels with cabins built onto platforms on the sparkling blue lake. Fishing, boating, and hiking are all possible on the lake in addition to the cool dam which is among the world's highest.
