My son and daughter-in-law decided they needed a wedding with a seated dinner for at least 200 people and there was nowhere in her hometown of Trieste that could accommodate that, but they found Susan's Castle could. While many Americans even Brits or others might not think of it as a castle because it's locking and Tourette's or high walls or remote it is a spectacular structure from the early 17th c. with a large lawn surrounding and a protective wall surrounding that. Apparently it never had to be the site of a battle but, just the same, was the primary castle in the area in the 17th c.
Events here are magical.
The plan was for the wedding to be outside on the lawn in front of the castle, followed by cocktails inside and on the lawn on the back side, with seated dinner on the upper floor in the ballroom set up as a dining room. While it had rained earlier in the day the castle manager said keep hoping she was sure that the weather would pass by and it did. So chairs were set up outside on the lawn under the trees a perfect wedding location and as the guests gathered at the castle entry and had pre-wedding beverages then everybody went out to the lawn for the service. After the service everybody walked back to the main entrance of the fabulous stairs inside to the first floor where drinks were served a gypsy band was playing and then out to the backyard where there was another bar and furniture for enjoying the late afternoon weather which was perfect. When people had had enough of that then everybody came inside and went upstairs to what would be the Ballroom in the beautiful vaulted ceiling space but had been set up as a dining room for 200. The service was professional and spectacular, the food equally as wonderful, and the room magical. There's no place that I know of in America (that isn't associated with some hotel) that could pull off something this special.
At the end of dinner we all went back downstairs to the first floor where a small combo played for a little after dinner difestifs and beverages before the cake was cut outside with sparklers and everyone watching. Then we went into the ground level floor where a DJ played (in what would have been essentially the dungeons or the basements) and everybody danced almost until dawn.
There are a few bedrooms up on the third floor in the corner towers and those were used, in this case, by the bride and groom, bridesmaids and groomsmen who were staying in the castle.
If you're looking for a place for a special party a wedding any kind of event in the greater Udine area, this would be my first choice.
