I call it a trek to Castelmonte, because, maybe caused by the confusing address on their web site, or an error from me, the satnav sent us completely in the wrong direction from our holiday home in Cividale. After we corrected the problem we reached Castelmonte, but via which roads and villages I will never know. The journey home was rather straightforward ...... But enough of this. I can tell you that the Santuario Castelmonte is an very impressive small village of two streets on top of the hill, crowned with a terrific church. Views from the square in front of the church over the surrounding landscape are breathtaking. How to get to the church. The straightforward way is to leave the car at the large parking lot at the base of the hill and walk. If walking uphill is a problem for people in the party, halfway the road uphill is a limited parking area with an elevator, delivering you in the church.

The sanctuary is in an amazing location - not far from Cividale, on the top of a pretty high hill accessible with a winding road. The views are fantastic and it is really worth the drive.
The sanctuary itself has a lot of religious significance and depending on your beliefs it can be a deeply emotional experience, or an interesting example of the ex-voto phenomenon. Either way I really recommend it.

The convent jump out directly from the medieval age. Perched on the hill above San Daniele, make you feel how it should be the life one thousand years ago.
The uphill to reach this fortified castle is really amazing. nine kilometers of steep and steep road. the convent is place of pilgrimage and along the road you can find people walking on the side of the road. The road itself is also a place of a famous car race "the rally of Friuli and of the Eastern Alps".
If you feel brave and strong you can try to climb the road with bicycle.
From the top of the mountain the landscape is very beautiful. Under your feet is streched all the plain of Friuli and on both your side there are the Alps. All around you the silence that you can find only in a place of meditation.
For work I have the lucky change of visiting the private places of friars inside the convent. Even if now is fully renovated the sensation of walking inside ancien walls still persist.
This is an amazing place of meditation and peace.

This Sanctuary sit up int he mountains with views into the valley, it is well worth the drive up. There is plenty of parking once you get to the top. This place does get busy with the locals attending daily mass, so be mindful of noise. You have to check out the sculptures that sit underneath the church. I was so impressed by the sculpture of Lucifer being defeated. (pictures included below)
There is also a cafe, restaurant and a gift shop within the area.

This isolated mountaintop sanctuary is peaceful and perfect for contemplation and reflection. There are regular masses throughout the day, and some souvenir and coffee shops for you to enjoy. Great views of all of Friuli - walk across the parking lot to the large cross for a good vantage point and photo-op. The complex of buildings is very difficult to negotiate for anyone with mobility issues. For people who need to use the lift, keep driving around the buildings (always going up) in your car until you come to a dead end. There will be an elevator on your left to get you up to the church.

My mother, aunt and families used to ride to Cividale by horse and buggy before the war to make their journey to Castelmonte by foot. At 9 kilometres and uphill, this is not for the faint of heart. They would stay at Castelmonte for a couple of days before the long walk back.
Castelmonte is a famous sanctuary due to the Black Madonna & Child, as well as the healing miracles that have occurred here. It is good to get a blessing there.
This is a nice excursion for those travelling to visit Cividale. Lovely views of the surrounding Slovenian and Udinese countryside.
