I came in hopes of seeing the massive Saint Christopher sculpture on the facade, but it was covered in scaffolding. Nevertheless, there was still plenty to see. MAKE SURE you sign up to TOUR THE CRYPT! The frescoes are superb.

The town was hit by the earthquake too and partially reconstructed. The Cathedral took its Gothic form back and holds a beautiful facade with statues, and impressive rose windows. The interior holds some ancient decorations still but most was unfortunately lost during the quake.

While the Duomo itself is not the most inspiring of all of the churches I've seen, the brief history lesson I got at the Museo della pieve helped to put it into context and made it a far more interesting experience.

In 1976 Gemona suffered 2 different strong earthquakes within 5 months, and because of them every building, among which the Cathedral and the tower bell, were heavily damaged.
The Gemonian with huge courage and fortitude decided to rebuild everything "how it was, where it was". Thanks to them, we can admire again the tower bell, the Gothic rose window, the Romanic gate, the internal slanting columns and the whole cathedral. Not to be missed, a wonderful - although mutilated - Crucifix, that is the best symbol of the Gemonian Renaissance

This church suffers badly by comparison with the results of the rebuilding of the nearby church in Venzone, which was also badly damaged by the two major earthquakes in 1976. That is inspiring, this one is surprisingly dull. The interior is gloomy and the style is depressingly gothic. The one exception is the front facade, which is full of fascinating architectural and sculptural features.

This town has hit hard during the earthquake of 1976. Many of its historic walls, buildings and street were in ruins after the quake. We learned that stone mason's actually numbered the bricks for each building so that they could be removed from the site and then later restored to their original place. Several large posters hang in town telling the story of the renovation. A beautiful church, the Duomo de Gemona is worth the tour, along with a few shops selling lavendar gifts such as sachets, soaps, cookies and candy. We visited in the early evening and stopped in the Bar Ristorante Al Duomo and warmed up with the best hot chocolate I've ever had.

Not only this cathedral is beautiful, but it has a dramatic recent history because of the destruction it endured during the 1976 earthquake that destroyed the area. If you like Gothic, you must stop here and visit, period!

You shudder to see what the Friulians were able to do after the 1976 earthquake. Under the arcades of the city you can see the images that photographed the immense destruction and in front of you you see the bell tower, rebuilt as before. Just incredible.

This church was built in Romanesque Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th century, on the ruins of an older place of worship.
Despite the numerous renovations that have taken place over the centuries, the façade still features a series of original medieval furnishings among which, on the right, stands out the enormous seven-metre-high statue of San Cristoforo. The crossing of a river, which according to hagiographic tradition the character completed with the Child on his shoulders, is rendered in a very original way by depicting two aquatic creatures at the saint's feet: one real, a shrimp, the other decidedly more imaginative: a siren. Also interesting, above the entrance portal, is the representation of the Epiphany framed in an elegant portico with columns with the Maternity surrounded by the Three Kings in the centre. Both this and the previous work are attributed to Griglio da Gemona (architect and sculptor very active between the 13th and 14th centuries). Noteworthy are the three rose windows that dominate the upper part of the facade; the central one, much larger than the others, was built in the 16th century by Bernardino da Bissone known as "il Furlano". On the left side other bas-reliefs depict some sacred subjects, among which we can see an angel in the act of weighing the soul of a deceased person (a ceremony formerly known as "psychostasia") while a mischievous little devil tries to sabotage the operation by hanging himself from a scale plate. The entrance portal is inscribed in three beautiful concentric frames with geometric floral motifs, rather splayed towards the inside; the bas-relief on the lunette depicts the Redeemer flanked by the Madonna and Saint John.
On the left of the facade stands the mighty 50 meter high bell tower, completed in 1369 as attested by an inscription near the narrow entrance door. A conical spire overlooks the belfry, ventilated by a harmonious three-light window closed at the bottom by a small balustrade.
The interior, with three naves, is characterized by two powerful rows of columns that support a very high ceiling with cross vaults. The works of art preserved in this church are affected by the numerous hardships that have befallen the building over the centuries (earthquakes, fires, looting, etc.). In the right nave there is a valuable "ancona", as the altarpieces of ancient Gothic churches were called, where thirty-three episodes from the Bible are represented in bas-relief. The work, created on gilded wood at the end of the 14th century by Andrea Moranzone (a specialist in this type of work) was unfortunately significantly damaged by a fire. Not far away you can admire an evocative medieval "Pietà" of the German school and a crucifix mutilated by the 1976 earthquake, fortunately recovered from the rubble.
This tragic and ruinous event caused very serious damage to the bell tower and the church. However, both buildings were promptly restored in the previous lines and today they are the symbol of the courage and tenacity with which the Friulians react to natural disasters. The Cathedral of Gemona is dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta. Near the building you can visit, upon reservation, a small museum which houses a collection of ancient art objects that survived the earthquake and a historic collection of sacred Friulian goldsmithery.
