Small temple 3km walk up hill from ticket entrance. Nice vistas over rice paddies on ascent and return, step steps at end. Disappointing that vandals had carved into stones, and all Buddas were damaged. Long drive and walk for a small temple. The silver lining was that we spent 90mins exploring the rice paddies and plantings as a "detour" on the way up - a local farmers guided us (didn't even expect a tip, so was genuinely pleased to get one). Detour was not sign pathed and only feasible because my travel companion spoke Bahasa.

Sometimes, it’s not the destination, it’s the journey. This certainly applies to Candi Selogriyo. It is a long climb up a narrow road to a village, and then a walk of about 1.6 km up a nice brick path, with a not- challenging 122m climb in all, to the temple. The temple is a Hindu temple which is fairly simple and low- key compared to the many in the area. The grounds are well- kept and it is a peaceful and serene setting. There is a table and seats under a roof, so you can take refuge in a storm or just chill out and enjoy the setting.
The path leading to the temple is magical. You must walk through the small village, which is alive with the locals. Then you exit the village, walking along a mostly even brick path and up towards the temple. On both sides are vistas of terraced rice fields and water buffalo being put to work. There were a few locals on foot and on motor scooters along the path, but no other tourists when we went.
We were lucky that the locals were playing a game with pigeons when we walked back. One of the guys went up the path about 500m from the village with cages of pigeons strapped to the scooter’s back. One by one, he released them, and each one flew down the hill. At the edge of the village, the others were holding the pigeons’ mates, and the returning pigeon would have to fly into a square and land just where its mate was – closest wins. They seemed to be taking bets.
It was the best glimpse into the life of rice- growing villagers that we had the whole three weeks.
It is set on the east side of 10,800 ft. Mt. Sumbing. The temple is located at 7deg 25’ 28.52” S and 110deg 10’ 03.44” E. Some of the map locaters are pretty far off. From this GPS coordinate it is easy to find the path leading down to the village on your favorite sat view service.

Came to visit this well hidden gem. Totally absorbed by the beauty of this place. Trekked through the padi fields and interact with the friendly locals. It is totally amazing! Love this place. The temple is under reconstruction but it is a really must see place in Borobudur region.

Thank you for taking a part to conserve our nature. There are plenty of beautiful places like Selogriyo, in Java island. Happy to welcome everyone to come and explore others, like Pronosutan View and JogloMenoreh new spots.

Certainly one of the best rice terraces we have seen, better than the famous Jatiluwih rice terrace in Bali. You are able to go into the rice terrace itself, getting quite close to the buffalos ploughing the paddy field. You can see how local farmers live, they are actually very friendly!
We went just after breakfast and we did not see any tourist. The 2 km hike was not difficult, there were slopes here and there but not steep. As other reviews said, the temple is currently being restored so there is not much things to see for the temple. The rice terrace is certainly the highlight!

Although you can do the hike by yourself, highly recommended to get locals to guide as they will be able to bring you inside the rice terrace, they do look a bit like a maze!

The temple is not "not much to see" as I've read before, it is really nothing to see unless you are an Hindu- expert or archeologist.
BUT I would still recommend to go!
You can book a tour or go by yourself by motorbike as we did- it is a nice drive up to the get although hard to find (I will include some information on how to get there in the pictures- there actually is a sign at the street but it is very tiny! Also google maps shows you to the wrong spot). We had a drawn map, GPS and asked around- people were very helpful. You can leave your motorbike at the mosque a few meters before the tiket booth (for foreigners it's 10.000 each). You can also do as the locals and ride all the way up to the temple- we did that. But beware, the path is mostly not more than one meter wide and it is quite risky by bike. I imagine a hike being even better but due to lack of time we couldn't. On Sunday's there really are lots of Indonesian teenager couples with motorbikes.
It took as about 4 hours to go there and back from Borobudur.
To get there head towards temporan and then towards bandoran and then towards the village windusari. But don't go into windusari as the road to the temple breaks of (looks like a field road) to the left before the village (there is a sign saying candi seligriyo).

This walk to the temple was a delight, you have a chance to meet people outside of the normal tourist areas, and the rice paddies are awe inspiring.

A good hour away from Borobudur, we were thrilled with the drive through villages, until we arrived at our destination at the end of a steep track and dismounted. There are two routes up to the temple - we chose the one via the paddy fields in order to get the better views; on the way back we descended via the paved path, which is also the thoroughfare for the numerous motor bikes that ply up and down to the fields. Well rewarded by stunning scenery and, with our guide, we learned about the local hobbies of pigeon-racing and the crops, as well as a few words of Javanese which had the local ladies in stitches. Everywhere people were charming and friendly; the temple itself quite small, but set in pretty, well attended gardens underneath a volcanic hillside. Well worth the trip and we were the only people there, which was perhaps the best part!

The temple at the end your 30-45 minute walk is small but pretty. The highlight is the journey to and from there. The little village, the people working in the rice paddies, the chillies and other plants growing on the borders, the boys racing their pigeons, the butterflies and buffalo made the afternoon memorable for all of us. It's not an arduous trek, but a pleasant stroll along a path. The temple itself is tiny, with heads missing off carvings etc., but it is set in a pretty little garden with a lovely view.

My 5 star goes to the rice fields on the way. The temple itself is under renovation at the moment but it is still worth a visit if you want to see rural life on the rice fields and in the village. Lovely area!

The way up to the temple through the small village and past the rice fields is nice. Be prepared for a 1,5 km walk to reach the temple. The temple is however currently under renovation - so there is actually no temple at the moment, only piles of stones. It was unclear to us, what had happened to the temple. However the view from the site of the temple is beautiful as well as the walk up.
