We tried to mail Manohara several times and also used there on line form to try to get a reservation. No response, none. On-site we queried about the status and we’re told the sunrise tours are no longer available. Also as most probably have heard it is no longer allowed to climb the temple, only walk around the base. It is NOT possible to see the famous stupas on the top, even from a distance, anymore. Rumors have circulated that it would open again in January 23, but that plan has been cancelled by the government . Staff think it will open again during 2023, but don’t know when. This was the status today on Jan 13.

I joined the Sunrise trip few years back before the pandemic, and it was awesome. We had the chance to climb up to the temple and watch the sun rise from the temple complex. However, during the pandemic and renovation on its way, the reception informed us that we can only watch the sun rise from the hill across the temple. A bit disappointed, but when we got there, it came to our surprise that it offers a whole new experience. Seeing the sun rise with the silhouette of the temple from a far is quite magical. After enjoying the view, breakfast was served picnic style with a guide telling the story of Borobudur. Very educative, relaxing and enjoyable. During covid time, the group is limited to a very small size, please call and book ahead. Worth waking up at 3am and the 1 hour drive to the temple from city.
