- SameeshBengaluru, India1 contributionAwesome mangroves!Great place to experience a canoe ride in between the mangroves. A few movies were shot here and is the 2nd largest after Sunderbans. This is couple of hours for pondicherry and will have to set aside a day. You may also experience lunch here at 2 homely places with fish, crab and prawns. Overall a good place for family.Visited November 2022Traveled with familyWritten March 10, 2023
- sunshin_pGreater Noida, India130 contributionsMust visit if you are in pondy. This is a must visit place to experience back waters like kerala. But be ready to pay in extra cash to driver to take you inside the channels. Take one hour as it's not worth more than that. Near by Light house is a waste. Take a row boat only to enjoy. Motor boat will not take you inside the channels. It take 2-3 hrs to reach this place and the road is really bad.Visited March 2023Traveled with familyWritten March 31, 2023

Location: Google Maps is spot on and will take you to the Tourist Information Centre. Tickets: Row Boats (prices vary from INR 400 per person) to Speed Boats (INR 1800 per boat, up to a max of 8 passengers, 2km, 40 minutes). Facilities: There are some food stalls. Rest rooms are reasonably clean. Weekends are crowded. Overall, the whole thing is slightly disorganized, but ultimately you get a boat number and a departure time. You can see mangroves all along the water body, with roots hanging down into the waters. It is quite a beautiful area. If you tip the boatman, he will take you deeper inside, where the mangroves become tunnels or caves. That is an experience. You will need to be careful and duck low to avoid being hit by the low hanging roots. The overall ride was for about an hour and it was truly exciting to go through the mangroves. As a bird photographer, captured a Striated Heron (see photograph), but did not have the right settings for eagles in flight, just as we emerged from the dark tunnels! But such is life for a bird photographer.Visited April 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten April 11, 2023

Enjoy a 40 minute boat ride, gentle splash of the water along the boat side, absorb the serenity of these silent sentinels of the sea coast. The State Tourism board has a streamlined efficient system. Enjoy a scrumptious meal at Hotel Mangrove 2 km away.Visited July 2023Traveled with friendsWritten July 12, 2023

What has the potential to be a worthwhile experience was in fact underwhelming, boring and frustrating.
Having paid for our boat and then our foreigner fee, our boatman requested 500rupee more to go faster and further into the Mangroves, which of course he didn't do.
We saw a couple of birds fly for their lives from the noise of the 6 boats of school children who were also on the same route. That was it for wildlife!
This was a waste of money, time and effort. Such a shame because it has great potential.

Most underrated place ever and is a must visit. Best of all, we timed it brilliantly from weather and season perspective. This is must go during Nov/Dec timeframe otherwise be ready for getting roasted. I would definitely recommend row boat for the paddle and just pay the guy the extra amount. You will not be disappointed.

We visited this after visiting Chidambaram temple . Motor boat costs Rs.1800 whether one single person or 8 max . Manual boat cost Rs400. We bought motor boat ride payijg 1800 for two of us but a family of 5 offered to contribute and join us .BBot duration is 40 minutes but boatman asked extra 500 for taking ride to narrow lanes ,shooting spots; but everywhere same spot just mangrove trees and nice ride experience. Better to carry water bottle . Once again mismanaged tourism in terms of pricing, organising, parking etc - same old tendering for parking, ticketing queue . Good pleasure trip for anyone to chill out .

Had a nice pleasant boat ride in this mangrove forest. It is 1.5 to 2 hrs driving distance from Pondicherry.
There are 2 types of boats- Rowboats & Motor boats. Boats are not in the best condition, but not too bad either. Life jackets were provided. Proper ticket counter with fixed prices present. We went in row boat right thru the small waterlanes of the mangroves
Plz note-
1. Go for rowboats. Motorboats cannot enter the narrow water pathways thru the mangroves, they will only circle them. In rowboat, we actually had to duck a couple of times to avoid the branches of mangroves, we were so close!! Got some great clicks.
2. Motor boats have a roof, rowboats do not( probably since they enter into the narrow lanes of mangroves). So be sure to carry glares, caps, sun tan lotion etc.
Overall a nice trip, you can club it with a visit to Nataraj temple in Chidambaram, or a half day trip from Pondy

Very Nice place, decently developed. Can take either motor boat or row boat. There are different cost depending on the duration of ride. They are sanitizing the jackets, taking safety measures. But apart from boat ticket, u should plan to spend few hundreds extra to give to the boat person so he will take care of well.. Also there is ticket for camera, watch tower. Worth spending couple of hours. Attached the price list

Travel was safe and nice, it was 1 km inside the Mangrove trees through a manual rowboat. The trip from pondicherry to Pichavam is quite hectic with a broken road. It takes about 5 hours from Chennai for a distance of 220 km. However, it is all worth it once you reach Pichavaram. Seafood is good in local restaurants.

While entering this place for ticket I was in Big doubt as that place was not maintained by tourism, No cleanliness and overpriced ticket for boating....but after entering Mangrove forest I forgot all my complaints....again as read in earlier reviews the boatman asked for extra money if we want to go further (I can't understand that almost all reviewers write this still there is no action from Govt or Tourism Dept there. The walk on board track was damaged...The nature has given boon to this place but due to mismanagement and typical human behaviour make you to return with bitterness even after visiting such amazing place

Yes. Exclusive to Pichavaram is not worth. You may want to club with something like we did a east coast tour in Dec covering Pichavaram, Chidambaram, Pondy and Chennai. Pichavaram is worth seeing but definitely don't do it any later than Feb unless you want get some hard tan!!

Actually they will not take you more than half an hour.
Depends on the person.

Can we take our own car from chidambaram to pichavaram? Will it be a problem for Parking facilities?
Or whether renting a cab will be better? Please advise...

Hi, Does this place have private and TTDC boats? Heard TTDC offlate is allowing only 1 hour ride and the same is not enough to enjoy the mangroves... Please do share any contact of private operators, if available

It is always better to go through official boats. Two categories are available. One is row boat and another is motor boat. Row boat can accommodate up to 4, but suggested only for three. You can engage it for two hours also. Motor boats you can accommodate 13 persons. You have to pay for full boat even if you have less no of persons

Sir
U have written a great review.
I am planning to go there in 3rd week of Feb Please advice:
1. Best timing to go for mangrove forest
2. Boat charges for full ride that u took
3. How much total time will it take roughly from Chidambaram and back
s_goyal14
New Delhi, India181 contributions
It will be little hot at that time.
1. It is best to go there at around 8.30 AM
2. The boat charges are about Rs.700 for 2 hrs ride for 5-6 people. Don't go by motor boat or boat with shed. Carry water, and cap for the visit.
3. It usually takes about 3.30 hrs in total.
It is about 18 Kms from Chidambaram. You can hire an auto which will charge Rs. 600 for dropping , waiting and bringing back.
