Not sure what this title refers to, Jiaxing ancient canal? The whole city is built around a canal system, from small narrow ones through to the Grand canal which runs from Beijing to Hangzhou and flows through this city.
I would say if you are visiting for a day then Yuehe old town is the popular place and will allow you boat rides, shops and souvenirs. If you stay longer then look at getting to Meihuazhou for a larger area albeit modernised and if you want old and untouched then head to Xincheng.
It is not possible to go around Jiaxing without seeing canals of all sizes and if you walk around there are plenty of paths to follow, most are the Jiaxing greenway and flat so easy to walk.
I suggest you just wander about and explore the old streets and follow whatever waterway takes you fancy, get lost? just grab a taxi back.

Another must see when you're in the area. Lots of shops, restaurants and again some of the most amazing architecture, very pretty at night. Also night clubs if you are into dancing and drinking some.

A well preserved little village. Love the canals and the little shops. Well worth a trip.

The only downside is that the signs outside the bars, restaurants etc. should be subdued to preserve more of the character of the village.

A really enjoyable visit to see some of the older sites.

Got taken to see these ancient canals and despite the rain i enjoyed my visit. Gives you a glimpse of the past and nice just to walk and see a little history and how it used to be.Wear comfortable shoes. There are lots of places to eat. If you are in the area i would recommend a visit.

Lovely area with the whole of human life in one place. The market is bustling with everything you could ever want (and some you don't!) Nice bars and restaurants in the locale

Glamming with red lantern and golden light from Big torch. These old village walking street here sell foods , plants, golden fish , local snack and souvenir stuff plus some nice Chinese restaurants.

Jaixing Canal during Golden Week

This was a nice "Old Town" area. Lots of shops, a few gardens and relic displays, places to eat and many cool photo ops, which I guess is why it was in a Hollywood movie. Recommend visiting, just not during the "Golden Week" Chinese national vacation. This could have been a highlight of our trip, but the crowds killed it for us.
