Around 1.5 hour drive from Beirut the Hippodrome site has enough structures remaining to really see the size and structure of the original hippodrome- apparently one of the largest in the Roman Empire. Small entrance fee and lots of parking. As with
Most sites in Lebanon, essential to visit with an experienced guide to get the full fascinating history. Worth a visit.

It was the first big archaeological site we visited in Lebanon. It is gorgeous. You can see the ruins of necropolis, hippodrome and aqueduct. We spent here over an hour. It is worth to visit the site with the guide, otherwise you may miss some fascinating stories. It is one of two archaeological sites in Tyre.

As all other Roman ruins around Middle East, this is worth visiting and have a walk around.
Not crowded place at all. Hardly any people so really relaxing to wander around the hippodrome and the tombs around it.
We didn’t have any guide (not sure if you can have one) but Google always help to find out more.
Not very well maintained but again, not a disaster either.

There are two World Heritage sites here – first with the Necropolis, triumphal arch, Aqueduct and Hippodrome and then the remains of the town on the headland by the sea. Both are spectacular by any measure. We had an archaeologist as a guide which gave an immeasurable value-added to the visit. TripAdvisor should add a separate listing for the magnificent town site, part of which is submerged under the sea.

One of many wonders in Lebanon. Very well preserved roman ruins in the south of Lebanon. The hippodrome where chariot races took place. I sit and imagine watching the games. And going back in time. Life has really changed... entrance fee 6000LL per person. Worth the visit.

We visited as part of a small tour group and basically had the place to ourselves. Be sure to take time out to sit in the old circus stands and soak up the atmosphere. The only downsides to the place are that much of the site is overgrown, obscuring close-up views, and there is no signage. Keep an eye out for what look like little white flowers dotted around the place but which are actually the sun-bleached shells of former snails, still clinging to the stems of the plants.

Wow! What a gorgeous and stunning ancient historical site. The place is massive and it has gigantic proportions of archeological findings. It is great to have a tour around and see the remains. Not many places in the world can offer that.

The place is easily located and there is free/secure parking. The entrance is not that expensive 6,000 LBP per person and children for free. But be careful to avoid the heat as it gets really hot.

All is good and maybe in another good day organization and guide could be better organized. The rest is all good.

Tyre has sea, restaurants, bars, charming little streets, a lot of churches, a port and if you want to explore more local, day-to-day life you can go to the town and see chaos, noise, shopkeepers waiting for their clients and motorbikes squeezing between the cars... Between these two worlds, there is another one - ancient world.

Hippodrome is definitely worth a visit and it completed our experience in Tyre. I'm very glad that I've been there as it gives us a great perspective of time and history. We didn't read about this place before the visit and there is no information available at the spot, it's a shame because we didn't exactly know what we were looking at. Do your reading before you go, so you can appreciate this place better.

Also beware of stray dogs; we met about 6 of them together and it wasn't a nice experience...

I've told everyone about my visit here - it's truly incredible that we can see such a huge and Epic piece of Roman history in 2018. Despite there being substantial missing parts (thanks to the Crusaders) you can still get a real sense of history here of how the Romans got their entertainment. There isn't much supplied information about the Hippodrome so I would recommend researching it beforehand. And of course - you have to sit in the marble and stone seating to get the full sense of what it must have been like with chariots racing around, gladiators, naval battles, and who knows what other wild entertainment. I'm only sorry that I'll never get to see it in its full glory!
