I commend what this organization is doing to rehabilitate animals and to educate humans about their work. I enjoyed visiting Amazoonico, but found that we saw many of the animals housed there in the wild while hiking and boating in the area. If you're spending a longer period of time in the area or are interested in conservation methods, this place has some interesting information. But with limited time in the area, I would not rate this as a must see destination unless you are a group that might have challenges on a longer hike, like a family with young kids. This could be a great way to see some animals at a slow pace.

Our lodge planned this whole day tour for us, including a trip to the Amazoonico which we really enjoyed. A german speaking volunteer guided us through the areal and taught us very interesting and informative things. The animals at the rescue center are mostly from illegal keeping and brought there by the government. We weren‘t able to see all animals, since some are only active during the night but it was still a very nice tour.

I have been to many animal rescue and rehabilitation centers in At least 10 countries. This was not up to par at all. This is caged animals, many that will never be released into the wild. Let me add, very few animals (thank goodness). The jungle is filled with so many fun & educational activities I wish I had not wasted an afternoon here. I respect that someone wanted to start a program...but it seems it’s more of an opportunity to bring young European kids in to work and live with no pay- they even have to cover their own room & board. Maybe this place flourished when the founder was living, but not now. It’s depressing. Get a local guide and go into the jungle to learn about their lifestyles- medicines, foods, the plants and animals. Stay away from this place.

This shelter for injured and found animals is located in the middle of the jungle. We were given a tour of the animals that can no longer return to the jungle with a story about why that was the case. Fortunately, there are also many animals that can be returned, but they are cared for somewhere else so as not to come into contact with people. Nice that this exists

the place helps animals to get back to nature and thats amazing. You can see a lot of species there. They treat them and try to release them to the wild. Its about one hour visit and for sure it helps the case

Great wildlife rehabilitation centre with cats, monkeys and an array of bird life.
A lot of people say you have to pay $30+ to get there, but you don't.
Take a bus from the East end of Av del Chofer in Tena to Puerto Barantilo ($2), here go down to the river and catch a canoe (don't pay more than $3, each way) to Amazoonicas, total time 3.5-4 hours. Easy! If you want to do a cheap jungle tour check out Sinchi Warmi. (I did a review for this too)

This is looking less like a rescue centre and more like an outside zoo that needs funds. When the staff told us that the baby wildcats couldn't be released back into the wild (they were pacing) because the "staff had played with them", it made me very very sad. Needs to be taken over by an organization that is bent on rescuing, not keeping animals in cages to increase attendance!

What a great place to visit when in Ahuano. I was a bit skeptical as I'm not a fan of zoo's, but this really is a rescue center that is purely focused on the well being of the animals, mammals and birds they care for. The anaconda is massive, the large birds and monkeys delightfully noisy and the turtles and tapirs go where they like! We had a tapir constantly follow us, jumping three gates we closed! We also had a caiman come check us out and even spotted a jaguar. This is a great place to visit and well worth a few dollars donation for the great work they do.

I was really looking forward to the AmaZoonico Rescue Park. I was very disappointed. The young woman who spoke to us made it clear they were not a zoo. She clearly did not have any knowledge of how zoos work to save wildlife on a worldwide scale. She trashed all zoos. As a 9 year volunteer at a zoo that belongs to the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) I know her knowledge was limited by saying some of the things she did. I know how reputable zoos save wildlife and promote the conservation of species. Even now, I wish I had not visited since her comments can only hurt the conservation of wildlife if people believed her. Her group is doing some good things and their motives are good; however, one does not need to pretend they are an expert and give false information of other groups that have made huge contributions to saving wildlife and are working to preserve endangered and threatened species. If she truly cares about what the world is doing about saving wildlife, she ought to broaden her knowledge before making statements. It is as easy as going on websites of zoos and reading what they are doing to conserve species and save animals. The zoo where I volunteer sponsors a person who is in Namibia working to save the black rhinos. This zoo has been successful in breeding Prezwalski horses to add to diminishing herds in Mongolia. Her group is doing some good things; however, one does not need to pretend they are an expert and give false information of other groups that have made huge contributions to saving wildlife and are working to preserve endangered and threatened species. The zoo where I volunteer has been a home to countless orphaned animals and injured wildlife. They have a personalized diet (one monkey was even found to have gluten issues), personalized veterinary care (ex. one Komoto Dragon was given acupuncture to try to relieve arthritis}, and a home for life. Zoos around the world are working together to save wildlife from extinction. I wish the Amazoonica the best in helping and saving wildlife. Each animal saved is to be celebrated.

The tour is very informative but the guides seem to be influenced by the management and talk very bad about the current goverment. It was said that the current goverment does not care for animals and a lot more political talk. This is unacceptable as tourist we are not there to listen to the political view of this organization. We are there to learn about the animals and the rescue centre. This rescue centre also does not allow the native guides that bring the tourist to the centre to accompany the group on the tour. The reason being there is a lot of negative talk and bad information given about the native people and how they kill the local wildlife etc. I guess they think this kind of tactic will motivate you to donate to the centre but in reality it just shows unprofessionalism. As an informed traveler i know that the current government of Ecuador is pro concervation and the native people of the amazon is living of tourism so they want to conserve the wildlife and environment.
