蓮池

ここには　蓮池がある。毎年蓮の花が咲くころに行っている。
蓮の花は　美しくなんとも言えない。　この駅逓所は　クラーク博士が帰国の途中に立ち寄り「青年よ大志をいだけ」という名言の舞台となった場所だそうだ！　クラーク博士の記念碑もある。

旧国道沿いにひっそりと

北海道開拓期、函館～札幌間を結ぶ幹線道（馬車鉄道）開通時に、宿泊と運送の便をはかるべく設置された駅逓の一つです。
今風に言えばリレーステーション（←ガイドさん）。待機している次の馬をレンタルし、郵便物等の荷物を携えて次の駅逓まで・・。函館から札幌まで5泊かかったという不便な時代のオアシスのように思えます。
約100坪の平屋の内部には、台所、経営者に任命された中山久蔵の居室、客間、明治天皇北海道巡幸時昼食所となった奥座敷、通し土間があり、広縁をめぐらせて各部屋へ行けるようになっています。
傍にはクラーク博士が農学校生や職員と別れを惜しんだ本当の地を記念する有名な「Boys, be ambitious」の碑も。
明治30年、その役割を終え、国定史跡として開拓期の面影を伝えています。

開拓時代の雰囲気を味わう

開拓時代に使われていた交通拠点が保存されているほか、当時の稲作の方法の解説やクラーク博士の塔がある。クラーク博士に関しては塔があって略歴が書かれているだけで、それ以上のものはないのはがっかりだったが、「少年よ大志を抱け」のことばが語られた場所の雰囲気を味わうことは出来た。長い時間をかけて見るような場所でもないが、逆に短い時間で済むため、国道36号を通って千歳と札幌の間を行くときには寄ってみてはどうだろう。国道から車でほんの１分のところにある。

「少年よ大志をいだけ」はここで

駅逓というのは、現代で言えばターミナルのようなもので、開拓当時、馬による運送などの拠点であった。
札幌市郊外、恵庭市の道外れに古い駅逓が残っている。当時としてはかなり立派な建物であっただろう。往時が偲ばれる。そしてこの場所は、かのクラーク博士が見送って来た学生たちと別れた場所と言われる。「大志をいだけ」という名言は、ここで生まれた。

道路を挟んで駐車場とトイレがあります。
駅逓は当時のまま保存され、中には様々な展示物があり、施設の職員の方が駅逓の歴史を丁寧に説明してくれます。
歴史好きの方にはよい施設だと思います。

「青年よ大志をいだけ」の舞台！

札幌方面より恵庭方面へ国道３６号線を走り、３６号線を右（島松沢方面）へ下り切ったところ左手にあります。
ここは道内最古の駅逓（駅舎と人馬を備えて宿泊と運送の便をはかるため設置されたもの）で、クラーク博士が帰国の途中に立ち寄り「青年よ大志をいだけ」という名言を残した舞台となったとろみたいです。

素通りは勿体ない

新千歳空港から高速道路を使わずに札幌へ向かう途中。
国道36号線、島松沢と呼ばれる辺りです。
高速道路の下をくぐってからの緩い下り坂、ここを左折し旧国道へと逸れていきます。
今まで走っていた道とは違い、交通量も景色も一気に明治時代へ瞬間移動した気分になるでしょう。
旧島松駅のお向かいには手厚い無料駐車場。
休憩できる小屋もあります。
クラーク博士の碑が高くそびえ立ち、そのそばには明治天皇がお立ち寄りになった碑があります。
派手な観光地ではありませんが、せっかく北海道を観光するなら、まず初めに開拓の歴史に触れてみるのも良いかもしれません。
札幌へ向かう途中なので、遠回りせずに立ち寄れるのも利点です。

隠れた紅葉ポイント

趣のある旧駅逓の建物の周りは、紅葉の名所でもあります。
毎年10月中旬のこの時期は紅葉が美しく、密かに観光ポイントになっています。
あまり知られていませんが、クラーク博士のボーイズ　ビー　アンビシャスの名言が語られた場所。
明治時代のこの場所はさぞかし過酷な場所だったことでしょう。

建物の中は有料ですが、周りの庭は無料です。
向かい側にある無料駐車場横にはトイレもあります。
札幌と千歳空港を繋ぐ国道から少しだけ横道に入った場所です。
レンタカー等では便利ですが、公共交通機関はありません。

見送りにきた学生たちにかの有名な、ボーイズ！ビーアンビシャスという台詞を述べられた場所。北広島にはゴルフ場以外に名所はほとんどないが、国道からすぐの場所にあるのでお時間があれば是非。
