The São Clemente's Castle is a place full of history.
It was built in 1599 by Filipe II of Portugal because of the constant pirate attacks on the village of Vila Nova de Milfontes. This heritage is very well preserved and, specially, very beautiful. The best part is that, from the castle, you can see the diffusion between the river and the sea.
Definitely, i recommend it!

The Forte is amazing and the most important thing is the place where it is! With the Rio Mira just in front it takes our breath away mixing history with nature. Gotta see that if you go to Vila Nova de Milfontes.

My friend and I travelled up the west coast of the Algarve and eventually came to a halt in this very picturesque small town. We parked the car and was happy to find a Hotel vacancy next to it. Great value but I'll take my own pillows next time. We set off on foot downhill and enjoyed a seafood diner by the estuary. Over on the other beach a band was playing tremendous music and cars/vans were heading there for hours. Obviously a small music festival was taking-place. The whole experience was romantic and I'd love to return someday.

This place is dirty ,not cared for and one of the worst places we have ever been to.

There is dog excrement every where, no places open. It is shocking. The worse place we have ever been to in a beautiful country otherwise

Avoid at all costs

As others have said, an interesting looking fort with a nice view of the bay, worth a look if you are in the area, but honestly not worth making a major detour for. Since you can't get inside, 10 minutes is all you really need to take a walk around the walls, admire the view and take the obligatory snaps.

Really nice place, especially in the evening, when the sun goes down. Unfortunately we weren't able to go inside of the Castle. The gardens around it are very beautiful as well, giving the castle an almost oriental look. A couple of years ago, wooden planks have been build around the castle so you can see it from all sides.

Was a really nice little part of the coast to visit, the fort or castle as I incorrectly called it in my restaurant was a stunning architecturally important building really helping you to understand the demands placed on the borders of Portugal! Great day out visit this town.

Fort of Vila Nova de Milfontes.
The “São Clemente Fort” who is also known as the “Milfontes Castle”, from which the construction dates from in between 1509 and 1602, under the order of King Philip II of Portugal, this to give the maximum protection to the location from the attacks by the pirates from North Africa.
Anyhow the fort is a private property, so tourists do not have any access and on this moment it stands “For Sale”.

I love Vila Nova de Milfontes, one of my favourite places on the Alentejan coast. Stunning views of the Forte from Furnas beach, on the other side of the river.
