- sydneysider48Sydney, Australia1,196 contributionsConcrete reconstructionThe castle stands in impressive grounds and is surrounded by a moat. The building is not original but a concrete reconstruction and is disappointing in that respect. There are some exhibits throughout the castle but no explanations in English. The view from the top of the castle across the city is very expansive. Certainly worth visiting if you are in Aizuwakamatsu, but not worth a special trip, except perhaps during the cherry blossom season.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten March 14, 2024

- k_matsu132Kushiro, Japan23,592 contributionsI love the red-tiled roof.Standing in the center of the city of Aizuwakamatsu, Aizu Wakamatsu Castle is also called Tsuruga Castle. This was our second visit to Aizu Wakamatsu Castle and our first in about 20 years. What was very different about 20 years ago was that the roof tiles had been replaced with red tiles. Compared to the previous black color, the whole castle tower looked calm. When Aizu Wakamatsu Castle was built, it was black, but red tiles were developed in Aizu to withstand low temperatures and snowfall. Today, Tsuruga Castle is the only place where you can see the castle tower using red tiles.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 29, 2024
- kaztvMinato, Japan696 contributionsLearn about the history of AizuIt is a new and beautiful castle for better or worse. There are various exhibits on each level of the castle, and you can learn about the history of Tsuruga Castle. If you are interested, it may take longer than you think after taking a closer look. On the other hand, it doesn't have much of a castle feel, and some of you may find it quaint. I thought it was a very interesting exhibition for those who are interested in the Sengoku period including Ujisato Gamo and the tragedy of Aizu at the end of Edo period.Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 10, 2024
- hinahina2,413 contributionsStroll through Tsuruga Castle Ruins ParkThis park offers a panoramic view of Tsuruga Castle. It was my first visit, but the day was getting too much, and it was time to not be in the keep. I lightly circumnavigated the castle ruins park surrounding the castle. I entered from the east exit parking lot side, but the high stone wall that towers over the outer moat I was surprised by the rugged and solid construction that kept people away. It is no wonder that this was a fierce battleground in the Boshin War. Many foreign tourists can be seen in the well maintained castle park, Everyone took a commemorative photo with the castle in the place of their choice and the atmosphere was peaceful. The inside of the castle looks large and full of sights, so come first thing in the morning when you next visit I thought I would spend half a day watching it.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 7, 2024

We stopped by on the second day of a family trip. It seems to have been renovated, and the inside of the castle was air-conditioned and comfortable, but perhaps a little too comfortable. There were many interesting exhibits on the first floor, and it seems that the Hoshina family, brothers of Tokugawa Iemitsu, ruled the castle for a long time, but I didn't know that Date Masamune also ruled it for a time.

Gorgeous, quite large and picturesque castle with unique red-colored roof tiles and walls of pristine white surrounded by vast grounds full of nature, like cherry blossoms and more. Every corner is filled with a fascinating historical tidbit, making it worth going on a tour so you don't miss anything. The history of the castle is interesting and tragic, and it played a surprisingly big role, yet is relatively unknown. Also, definitely stop by the teahouse for a bowl of matcha while walking the grounds!

like many re-built castles, Tsuruga-jo is a historical museum in a town with a rich samurai history. From the lookout at the top of the Castle, there are panoramic views of the city, and on the way out, a large gift shop. Definitely worth visiting when you are in the city

Well, I've been here a few times now, but much nicer when the sun is shining. Suggestion: do a little bit of prep to find out its history, the white tiger battalion, etc., BEFORE you go. You'll get much more from the experience! If you are unlucky, you'll find the hoards of schoolkids on their day out, but they soon get marshaled away in efficient Japanese manner. Great views from the top tower. Indeed, there is a lot to see and do in Wakamatsu.

Tsurua jo Castle is a replica of what it used to be. The foundation, moat, and a tower stand today and there is a castle museum. It's worth walking the grounds, I feel this castle was impressive at some point in history. It's beautiful to walk around the grounds and see the castle. I can imagine it is especially beautiful during Sakura.

This was the first place that we visited upon arriving into Japan from Narita. By the time we reached, it was already around 3pm in the afternoon. This castle was a rebuild and not an original castle. But it was still worth a visit as the family is fascinated with Japanese castle. Good and beautiful garden surmising the castle makes it rather picturesque.

The castle grounds are always open, though the main tower is open just during the day. Go in the early morning for private views of the foilage. It was foggy during my visit, creating a magical scene. Cherry blossom season is also recommended.

This castle is one of the plain looking ones that I’ve been to but it does look elegant. You won’t need to spend too much time here, maybe just an hour. There is a gift shop at the castle where you can buy some souvenirs. There is also parking nearby.

I visited Tsuruga Castle on a weekday, but there were so many people enjoying cherry blossoms there. The building itself was beautifully reconstructed, but you can see from old pictures how fierce the battle was when Japan was experiencing the Restoration about 150 years ago.
I stayed there only for three hours since it was a day trip from Tokyo. It should have been worth walking around in the town to see other historic sites if I had more time.

One of the best attraction in Aizuwakamatsu-shi. Lower floor is free but viewing on top floor need to pay. Cherry Blossom season should be great.

How easy is the access to the grounds? (NOT the inside climb to the top). I have been disappointed many times to arrive at a castle and find it inaccessible to me due to steep hill climbs and/or steps.
Written June 14, 2019
This castle is pretty easy to access. It is a short walk from the car park area and its not such a steep climb and only a few steps.

バス停の鶴ヶ城入口からお城までの距離、時間を教えてください。
当方、足が少し不自由です。
Written April 11, 2019

Fukushima airport is the closest, then, likely Niigata,,, but, overall, the cheapest place to fly to maybe Tokyo -- and then highway bus to Koriyama and then bus/train to Aizu
