Old, magnificent, heart breaking piece of history of the great nation. Survived trough centuries fortress , high walls, old artillery cannons all around makes you imagine how life was at those times of The Great Portugal!

A strategic fort at the Tajo mouth.

Built in a strategic location that dominates Barra's entrance, São Julião is one of the most important military buildings in the country. Although it is not possible to specify the period when the works of the Fort of São Julião began, the opinions are divided between the years 1553 and 1556. Like other fortifications, São Julião da Barra also served as a military and political prison. In 22 of August of 1951 loses its military function to assume the passage to new functions of state and reception of political events. The visits can be scheduled..

Considered in the past as the Shield of the Kingdom, greater maritime fortification in the country.

The São Julião da Barra Fort is the largest and most complete military defense complex in the Vauban style reminiscent of Portugal. Built in São Julião da Barra, at the tip of São Gião, the extreme west of Oeiras in front of the Tagus bar to protect the capital from naval attacks because the ships are forced to pass very close to the fort because it is the only place deep enough.

It had originally, together with the Fort of São Lourenço do Bugio, with whom it cooperated, the function of control of the entrance and exit of the boats in the bar of the Tagus and the access to the port of Lisbon.

During the French invasions the troops of Napoleon Bonaparte, under the command of General Jean-Andoche Junot, landed far from the reach of the cannons of the fort and attacked him by ground, dead angle of firing, and took him

Standing strong against the elements

The Fort is inaccessible to the public (I believe it’s used by a Government department) but is an important coastal landmark between Oireas and Carcavelos beaches. The sea is currently choppy and the waves that crash against the Fort, impressive.

A focal point on Carcavelos' beach

This is not open to the public (I think it's used by the Ministry of Justice) but provides a great base from which to photograph beach scenes and sunsets. Fishermen also cast from the surrounding rocks.

The surrounding area is an important graveyard for shipwrecks. It's believed the ‘Nosso Senhora dos Mártires’, a pepper ship returning from Kochi, India, was wrecked nearby on Sept 15th 1606. The ship was located between 1996-67. Artefacts linked to it were recovered from the site and are on display in the (recommended) Maritime Museum, Belem.
