A group of friends and I went on the Glacial Lake Inflatable Kayak Tour and wow, what an amazing day of adventure! The scenery was breath taking, our guide was friendly and professional and even the weather cooperated with us. After a lovely paddle back to an ice wall we stopped for some lunch and a chance to take in our surroundings. Then it was off to find an iceberg to jump off! Yes, an iceberg to jump off! That was definitely the highlight of the day. Each of us took our turn plunging into the glacier lake and swimming back to the iceberg edge. Exhilarating to say the least. We have lived in Alaska for 6 year years now and have done lots of adventures, but this experience is at the top of our list. Even our friend who are lifelong Alaskans agreed it was one of the best adventures they've had. And if that was not enough on the return paddle back we hit a couple awesome rapids that also thrilled us! I would highly recommend trying this or another trip offered by McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters. Safety and professionalism come first, but adventure definitely comes second!

Beautiful 3-day trip with Sam Cox from McCarthy to Chitina. Nik set us up with gear plus a sweet, private campsite so we could explore McCarthy and Kennicott before getting on the river. Johnny helped with our preparation and recovery. After morning launch & Nizina Canyon thrill, we floated and explored sand bars, streams, learning about geology, history, rivers, mountains. Epic trip with veteran guide!

We were not sure what our weekend getaway would look like due to COVID but McCarthy River Tours & Outfitters provided an unbelievably fun experience! Health was always considered, as we prepared and got out on the lake. Our guides Sam and Johnny were a blast to hang out with, and made sure we felt safe throughout our trip— especially as we navigated our own inexperience on kayaks. Such a great time. I’d definitely book with them again!

We had an amazing time and Johnny was a phenomenal host. That said, the cost for the half day 4 hour glacier lake tour was much too high, particularly given that the tour was promised at 4 hours 15 minutes, but was only 2 hours 45 minutes. This half day (really 2 hour 45 minute) tour was 50% more than a full day (8 hour) kayaking tour in Seward, and more than 50% more than a full day (8 hour) glacier hike.

Thank you for your thoughts and for taking the time to come out with us on your McCarthy adventure. We're bummed to hear you weren't completely pleased with your excursion as our goal is to be the highlight of your McCarthy experience. 2020 has been a tough year with the pandemic, as late as early May, we weren't even sure if we were going to be able to operate. We made adjustments to our scheduling and our tours to reflect the current realities & ensure for the safety of our guests and employees. The biggest adjustment was changing all of our day tours to be privately booked to ensure the safety of our guests. With that adjustment, our prices reflect the cost of operating groups of varying size with the per person cost going down with the more folks that are in your personal group. To successfully offset costs of trips, we naturally have to charge more for smaller parties. Our location and operation are much more remote than Seward which makes it hard to offer a direct price comparison, Seward is 2 hours from Anchorage on a well maintained highway while in McCarthy, in America's largest National Park, we are 8 hours with 320 miles, including 60 miles of dirt road, separating us from the financial hub of the state. The added mileage and remote location significantly increases the cost of operating. It is also hard to price compare directly with a glacier hike, the equipment involved with paddling in glacial waters, (drysuit, flotation device, kayak & paddle)) is significantly more than the price of the crampons needed to go on a glacier hike. We are the only raft outfitter in McCarthy that offers drysuits with trips, allowing you the experience of jumping from an iceberg into a glacial lake as well as protecting your personal belongings from the sticky glacial silt. I asked Johnny why your trip was a bit shorter than anticipated as our trips are typically full length if not longer than the advertised time, this being one of the benefits of a private booking. From what I understand, it was a misunderstanding on his part as he said the breeze on the lake was picking up and clouds were moving in, he made an assumption that you were getting cold from the weather and decided to bring you in a little earlier than anticipated. He apologizes for the misunderstanding and is bummed that he read the situation wrong. We had a great time meeting you and hope that the rest of your Alaska travels have gone well! Thank you again for supporting small, Alaskan owned business' in a very tumultuous time!

Thank you to Johnny at McCarthy River Outfitters for a great trip from start to finish! Our family had a wonderful time kayaking on Kennicott Glacier Lake and learned a lot about the McCarthy area. Johnny was professional, knowledgeable, safety-minded, energetic, and super fun to hang out with for four hours! We highly recommend McCarthy River Outfitters. Thanks and let us know when you get those t-shirts in stock.
