Really nice place to see the bridge made out of stone and have amazing views of the surrounding area and the river close to you. Has a park and ride if you park away but has closer parking. Nice place had a great time walking around the park and seeing how high up you are, gives you some really memorable pictures and memories of you or your family, perfect place to go to get out of your car with your family and go walking around for a couple of hours. Could probably spend all day there if you want as the park was really big and had plenty of different area to explore.
5/5
Would come back and explore more of it l.

This was my least favorite excursion on our Elbe River cruise. It didn't help that it was overcast, muting the rock formation colors, and then began pouring rain when we were out at the most exposed point. The views of the Elbe from above are fantastic, and those will be my favorite memories of this place, but anyone who has ever seen hoodoos in the American west should agree that those rock formations are more spectacularly colored and generally more interesting and beautiful than those at the Bastei.

My favorite place to enjoy nature in Germany, and possibly all over Europe. Around 1 hour hike and you can continue the hike beyond reaching Bastei Bridge.
Wonderful ice-cream when you cross the river and you can lie on the grass and enjoy the view

The first time I visited the Bastei, I took the train from Dresden. For a seventy year old, it was a bit of a hike to the top. Well lo and behold, I discovered once on top you can take a Bus there! You can also drive to the top.

We were on a tour visiting Germany and this was one of our stops. The views are awesome and so picturesque that we took many incredible photographs.

The Bastei is a rock formation towering almost 200 meters above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany. It is one of the most prominent lookout points in Saxon Switzerland National Park with old castle ruins and sandstone bridge with Elbe canyon views. Jagged rocks were formed by water erosion over one million years ago.

The hike to the bridge may be challenging for senior travelers with mobility issues. However, the walk includes many beautiful panoramic views of the rock formations over the Elbe River with lush greenery and wildflowers even in November.

Excellent parking and an easy walk past a lovely hotel and restaurant.

Worth the side trip to Swiss Saxony, some amazing walks, rock formations, the stone bridge something else. We were there on a sunny spring day, thoroughly enjoyed the trek. Cafe, good to reasonable watch for the refundable glass charge. Did not spot any beasties.

This is truly one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been in my life. I’d seen pictures in advance, which is why we went, but it exceeded all my expectations. We walked up from Rathen Kurort which is well worth doing as you gradually see more and more amazing views

I am so fortunate that I was told about this from someone that lives in Germany. There is not much information about it. It has gorgeous views!!! We skipped the "ferry" directions that we kept seeing. The best way to get there from Dresden, that we found, was to put your GPS to go to Berghotel and Panaramarestaurant Bastei. 01847 Lohmen. Bastei. Telefon - (035024)7790. www.bastei-berghotel.de
If you get to the hotel, the Bastei Brucke (the VIEW) is just about a minute walk just passed it on the trail. Its a dead end road. As you get close to the hotel, you will see two parking lots on your left. Park in the second one. Park. and walk about 7 minutes up the road. You will see the hotel on the left. The road dead ends into a snack bar area. Walk past the snack area on the right and there it is. You can walk across the bridge. If you want to view the bridge, go back to the toward the hotel, and there is a lookout point to see the bridge. It has beautiful sunsets. There are no snacks or restrooms available at sunset. It will be a little tough for handicapped persons to get to the sites.

First, a lot of talks about taking S-Bahn to Kuroat Rathen and hiking up a trail to the bridge, and not much about driving there. You can drive all the way to Bastei and here is how:

1. Drive to Berghotel and Panorama Restaurant Bastei 01847 (GPS address)

2. Once you reach a small driveway that seems to hit a dead end, there should be a parking lot on your left. This is an overflow parking lot, you just continue driving further (there might be a traffic sign that looks like it’s a no-entry, just ignore this as I think it warns visitors about the hotel property) into a second parking lot on your left. There you will see a lot of cars

3. From the parking lot, you will continue to walk further until you see the hotel

4. Walk straight past the hotel for the bridge (free to walk on the bridge, but there is a small fee to walk on a looped-trail that allows you to take pictures “with” the bridge on the background)

5. For the best view of the valley down below (see pic), you need to walk from the hotel’s main building toward the Panorama Restaurant where there is an outdoor patio and a platform for public. This is not on the looped-trail, so be sure not to miss it.

Second, nothing spectacular there (mainly unique rock formation and forest), but I enjoyed a nice break from our tour of cities and towns across Germany. You can do this in half a day, if you don’t have much time. You can also make it a day-trip from Dresden with hiking up/down, biking, etc.

For us, we drove out of Dresden in the morning, spent a few hours, and continued on to Potsdam to visit the palaces, all in one day and it’s doable.

One last note, if you plan to be there in the morning, try having a breakfast buffet at the hotel as it’s really good and reasonably priced (€14 all in when we visited).

We took the train from main station Prague to Bad-Schandau in Germany, deparing at 08:30PM and eating breakfast in the train restaurant. We arrived to Bad Schandau at 10:15 (the train station - at the south bank of the Elbe river).
To cross the river to the town-center, on the north rim of the river - we prefered taking the nearby ferry (leaving every half an hour and costs 1,5 EUR), but you may alternatively walk about 500 meters westward, to cross the river on the nearby bridge and then walk east for 10 minutes. Either way you have a nice view of the river and the town.
About 100 meter north to the ferry station, on the nothern rim of the Elbe - we found the tourist information center, where we received directions and time-table for the nearby Bastekraxtel bus, taking up to the Bastei (only 4 times each day, from April till October) for 6 EUR..
We took the BasteiKraxtel bus, leaving Bad Schandau at 11:30 and arriving to Bastei at about 12:10, with a nice view along the way
It takes only a few minutes walk from the bus-stop towards the BergHotel viewpoint, with a panoramic view from about 200 meters height above the Elbe river towards the stunning cliffs surrounding it. Yet, the climax is still ahead, while walking several more minutes further along the trail, crossing bridges that connect lofty cliffs, with numerous breathtaking viewpoints all along the trail.
We recommend to enjoy the Bastei stunning viewpoints for at least two hours (and take amazing pictures!). You may also return to the Berghotel panoramic restaurant to eat lunch, while enjoying the view.
We took the last BateiKraxtel bus, leaving Bastei at 16:35 and arriving down to Bad Schandau at about 17:15.
After visiting the town center and having a coffee break in the nearby EbleHotel terrace, with a nice view of the river - we took the ferry back to the train-station and caught the 19:38 train back to Prague, having dinner at the train.
We had an unfogetable day-tour.
