Prislop Pass - the highest mountain road pass in Romania - except alpine roads like Transfagarasan and Transalpina - so 1416 - DN 16 - crossing from Maramures region into Bucovina region of Romania.
In the vicinity of Borsa, in the pass there is a Monastery - a few guest houses - a ski slope for those who like winter sports - and some eateries and souvenir shops.
The views are spectacular - especially in early summer , late spring - but I also bet that in the winter you can take some spectacular pics.
In the pass there are parking lots - so it shall be no issue to stop to take a few pictures.
So when you are in the area , stop for 20-30 minutes - walk a bit around, stretch your legs - take a few pics - it is definitely worth it ... the scenery is amazing in any season.

The other 2 famous passes were still closed so I went for Prislop. The initial section from the East is still being re surfaced but after a few miles its then pristine new asphalt.
Was in a campervan so not too mental but great views. Would be seriously good in a fast car. Virtually no other traffic in April 19. Go there quick!

We visited during April 2017, when there was an unexpected snow storm which lasted several days.
This caused all the mountains to be covered in snow, providing great scenery.
Temps were (daytime) about minus 3-4 centigrade.
Near the pass there were several buildings being built, the exterior layout seemed to be that of a church.
Warning. At the time of this review, the whole road is in terrible condition. Full of deep and unexpected potholes, as well as many places where the road was deliberately carved up to install huge drainage pipes, leaving very tight spots to drive through. So be careful while driving there. This was absolutely the worst road we encountered on our 14 day trip.

The scenery through this pass is absolutely amazing but unfortunately the quality of the asphalt is really bad. However, if you are there for the scenery and you are not in a rush, you will enjoy the curvy, high altitude road.

If you have time, this is a fun and scenic route through the mountains. The potholes were being patched the day we drove this route and it really made a difference in its driveability. Between the hairpin curves, the lack of guardrails and the potholes, we could only travel 30-50 km/hour. But it was so beautiful! The road improved a lot after Moisei when Route 17C joined 18.

what a delight. I knew I will be driving this pass from maramures to bucovina but didnt read anything beyond that. and then the scenery at bucovina en route to the painted monasteries is quite something else. the entire journey reminds me of some of the mountains in switzerland.

recommend fueling up the car before starting the long journey since gas station are quite far apart. and do this drive on a clear, sunny day.

this is the highlight of my Romania trip so far.

If you need to see more of Romania's beauties, just stop on your way at Prislop Pass and you won't be disappointed. You can admire the mountains, the architecture of the monastery and if you get a glimpse of the majestic sunny days, you will be speechless.
