In the downtown of Caltagirone, there are a lot of attractions. Monuments, art and ceramics. I suggest you to visit this museum.

Bizarre local museum
Jun 2018 • Couples
This museum is in a former prison near the town’s main square. We walked in and were immediately greeted by a woman who spoke only Italian and told us she could give us a tour. We thought at first she was trying to sell us the tour, but it emerged that it was free and that we were not allowed to walk around the museum on our own. She walked us through the different rooms and tried to communicate points of interest in a very sweet way, but we couldn’t understand much, even when we pulled out a translator app.

There were some very basic signs indicating how different rooms were used, but no information about the prison’s history. Instead the rooms were filled with a truly random assortment of artifacts from throughout the town’s history, including some certificates and medals that had belonged to an early twentieth-century fencer, an old litter, and some portraits of the town’s former mayor.

The whole tour took about half an hour, and it was impossible to peel away since it was just us and the guide. Overall, it was interesting to see the inside of the prison but don’t expect to come away with very much information unless you speak Italian.

Amazing building!

This is an amazing building and is a must visit if you are in Caltagirone. The entrance is free of charge but unfortunately I was told by an attendant that pictures cannot be taken. The museum has a lot of interesting paintings in need of refurbishment. Also in my modest opinion I would suggest to rather use the building to show with the help of multi media tools what it was used for originally, taking visitors back to the history.

Former prison

This was formerly a prison but is most attractive inside. There are many beautiful paintings by various artists from differing periods
