Over one hundred stairs to climb, each with unique tiles. They provided quite a unique exposure into this charming city of ceramics.

only in these small sicilian tows are there these wonderful stiars that lead to other streets---and churches-- in the hill towns of italy. they are picturesque and the special steps to the churches of the hill towns lead to beautiful interiors.

Do not miss this gorgeous landmark! Each stair is decorated with a different hand painted tile. We were so impressed by the height and beauty of Caltagirone.

This is an interesting staircase in the center of town with more than 140 steps, each framed with different ceramic. It is framed by nice baroque buildings and the view from the top is superb. Surprisingly, since this, and the ceramic pottery, are the claim to fame of the town, it is a little run down, with some garbage, wild... More

Real old world charm. Very interesting little ceramic shops all along the sides of the staircase to visit, with lovely ceramic pots and plates and all sorts of nic-nacs.

We popped into Caltagirone for some ceramics on our way to Ville Romana dei Casala and weren't disappointed. We had great coffee in the piazza municipal at the old theatre and browsed the nearby shops for what we wanted all pretty much at the foot of the staircase of Santa Marie. It is a great sight in a lovely town.... More

These 142 steps are very pretty to look at. If you are fit enough to climb them, good for you. But if you cannot, do not worry, the view is better from down the steps.

On a recent trip to Sicily, we stopped by Caltagirone to see the Sicilian baroque buildings (awesome). We were incredibly lucky and were there on an evening when the stairs were lit (enlightened) with luminaria. This happens usually three times a year but the diocese was celebrating its 200th anniversary so the steps were lit for a fourth time. It... More

This stunning stairway is a pure artistic urban artifact. Each step shows a different decoration made by, of course, ceramic tile from Caltagirone masters. This city is perfect to be visited at any time even more suggestive during Christmas time, they are famous all over for the ceramic artifacts, and the nativity of Jesus Christ is the main theme by... Lovely place to wander around. Churches or palazzi everywhere. The steps lead off a square serving fast food and the usual ceramic shops too. Steps were a nice touch, some pavements nearby also had small ceramic tiles in centre of stone design. View from bottom was good- so many steps!
